At this rate you'll be building hull form plugs for your own fibreglass boats entirely from scratch in a few years.

Not exactly a cruiser but its a start

Picked this up a while ago 10 foot dinghy

Have plans for a few buoyancy tanks and to make a top deck/gunnel etc.

Cant get distracted from this one though, not easy to do I can tell you.

I have a feeling that your sewing machine might be OK for some projects but for corners where you can get 6 or even eight layers of canvas it will struggle.

You also need special "jeans" needles which do not have a very sharp point to cut the threads.

Also thread V90 to be UV resistant and non-twist. If you want some I've got some half reels of about 500m length I can send you.

Good point on the corners. After looking most materials are just over 1mm thick so it looks like we will be best getting a more HD machine then. No problem but after looking at them I am lost as which will be good for the job. Mite be better going to a machine shop and asking.

Full PPE will be worn welding gauntlets sounds good, dont like the thought of needles in my fingers. They are a bit bigger than my diabetic needles I use lol.


Now then a thought.

I know we are only just in to summer time and the so called season of good/better weather. I need to prioritise the jobs to be done.

Hull work and painting the whole boat and now the canopy needs doing before anything else.

See what is on this weekend and pop down to London ( only a 500 mile round trip I must be mad ) to collect the sandblaster and then at least I am ready to blast the hull ready to repair it. In the mean time research as much as possible on the canopy.

Interior can be done bit by bit after work and when I have spare time etc

Wayne, good going making the covers yourself. After a small bit of practice, it is easy. All the fittings can be bought on line. I used to make all my own covers as a kid, using a wartime cast iron singer machine. As sarabande says, you need a machine that can punch through 5 or 6 layers. I currently have a Sailrite electric machine, which is awesome and designed for canvas cover making. I'd be happy to lend it to you but alas it is at my "boating centre" in France so that isn't practical. sunbrella and Topgun are both fine - much of a muchness so use whichever one you can get at best price

I like the way they get the pattern with the tape along the frame. Watched it up to when they near marked all the patterns out. Will watch the rest later.

I will have a practice with making a cover for my trailer. It is only a small 5x4 Erde. Test my accuracy with the sewing.

There is a machine shop not far from us so I am going to pop in and see what they can suggest and get stuck in asap.

Appreciate the offer of the borrow of your machine. Never been to France.....yet lol.

I see the Sunbrella and Topgun are near the same price. And i was expecting the material to cost a lot more. I am going to send off for some samples and see which is the best colour/shade.

Some say the if the Sunbrella tears it can not be repaired but the Topgun can. I need to check that out more.

What a week it has been with one thing and another. I have been putting nits of money away every month towards a new canopy. Nit chap at all with the average being £1500 to have one made. So as this is a project and why break the habit of a life time hey.

I am going to have a go at making my own

To do this I need to move the boat horizontal along the drive so i have put the car in the pound along with the dinghy mould. A job in itself to move everything about.

Now I was going to get a Hiab in to lift it and drop it, but then i had thoughts why not just build a cradle for it and wheel it around......easy The cradle/s can be reused later as the way i have made them i can cut one down on the width to use for the dinghy`s when i pop a few out and the other cut in half so then i van use it as trestle to hang the mould from when laying up. spit roast type cradle.

This one of the cradles i knocked up this weekend, the other is in the process of being welded up but i am goosed now so early night to chill out.

It is made from 50mm x 2.5mm box section, the castors are rated at 150kg each and each cradle has four fitted each corner.

For the chine supports i made them hinged so they can get a good level.

Then bolted on 18mm ply.

Done but for a quick splash of paint.

Ready to go under well one of them.

While i was jacking the boat up to get the cradel under the boat started to move forward a bit, i got a little worried so i strapped the boat to the workshop wheer some time ago i had bolted a tow hitch to it for some reason i cant remember now.

All good to go and we have the first cradle under.

For now i have sat the cradle on blocks so as not all the weight is say on the castors.



Besides that i have got the Propex HS2000 cab heater in situ and the water heater is on its way, should be here tomorrow, i have after all the faffing gone with a Propex Malaga 5E which will sit above the HS2000.

Fitting the HS2000 vent

In the end i decided to fit it here, reason is the pipe work here needs to be minimum 750mm long and if i sat it further back they would of been to short. Not a big deal but for loss of a little storage space.

Vent is fitted but no sealed yet until all is good.

So that this weekends work done.



For those wondering why i need to move the boat out. Where it is sat at the minute i cant look around it and take pictures to help build/fit and design the canopy.

During this week the second cradle will be made so next weekend it will hopefully be ready to move. Oh and the two will be bolted together with the help of two lengths of box section to hold all tight. I was going to make one big one but then it would not of been easy to get it under the boat.

I hope the steel work is not coming out of the canopy budget. I'm sure we all have a tow hitch bolted somewhere on our houses:encouragement:

I have no idea where the money comes from but it keeps appearing every month when i get my spending money off T. Just glad the last appliance if now bought and the next big spend is the material for the canopy, thats not much either. A quick work out and the canopy should cost around £350 all in, frame canvas and fittings. Not bad towards the £1.5k it would of cost.

Oh and noooooo stress tell your wife :encouragement:

Still cant remember why i fitted that hitch there. Either for dragging a car up the drive or the boat. Either way it come in handy

I can turn my hand to a lot of things and generally like to do things myself, but I bow my head in homage to the things you take on and accomplish so well. You also achieve so much with so little space and a small budget. We need more people like Wayne in the world I say.

It would not be me if I didnt mess about with things. It would be nice maybe to go and buy a boat ready to go but then where is the fun in that. Maybe go and buy one ready to go then also have a project boat to mess with

I have to agree though i need a break and T deserves one more than me with all she puts up with. She is a bit of rough diamond but she is a bloody good one and will be my life time project to smooth her out.......sshhhhhh she doesnt read these forums lol.

And as it happens Dennis this is the boats anniversary and also our 11 year anniversary this Saturday and we are off to Ullswater in Cumbria for a night. T is really looking forward to it or for me not doing anything. We are going to look at moorings and see what is what around there.

France would be amazing. one day maybe, with the boat

I hate seeing pictures of myself but T forced me to show you all the T shirt she got me for our Anniversary.

I think you mite agree. It suits me down to the ground though.

Go down to Glenridding, to the boat hire/cafe at St Patricks boat landings, and talk to Jarred. He maintains the moorings on Ullswater and will know what is available, his wife makes great bacon butties!

Now I did have designs for a flat deck and build a slide on/ off bed to launch it but it needs 4x4 and not many about.

Just can't help myself much to It's annoyance at times.

Which pics can you not see and since which post ?

I use Postimage now as to before i used Photobucket but that is no good for me now.

One thing is you may need to join/download Postimage or something like that.

I have a little experience in taking photographs but hate the complexities in getting them posted - I'm sure someone out there will be able to help..

In the meantime may I say what a great thread! I have recently bought a Project project and have been fretting about a few things I want to do, but with little experience I was unsure if I could make the changes I want - however it is very clear from your thread that it is entirely possible to take on a project and with a little ingenuity and a lot of hard work make it work.

I just hope this thread helps you out in any way to get your project going. It helps me and as said hope it helps others to get motivated and give ideas

As for pictures i use https://postimage.io/, i am not a tech fan at all but this is easy.

I take pictures on my Samsung G7 phone then once dowloaded to the laptop i resize with http://www.fookes.com/easy-thumbnails which is a free download program, then transfer to the https://postimage.io/ program.

Copy and paste the image to this forum by the use of the URL. choose image then right click mouse and copy to paste in the `insert image box in the reply box.

I am afraid i have no updates on the boat as we went away for our anniversary this weekend ( ours and the boats being a 2 year project to date ) saying that we did look for a place to moor around Ullswater. We found a nice spot at Fairfield marina. Very quit at Glenridding for mooring and social life.

Still looking for a decent sewing machine for the canopy, but i have a place to visit this week with some same weight canvas i got on our way to our weekend getaway. The machine we have will not do it unless on full belt.

Ah before we went away i near finished the second cradle so all will be ready to move the boat this weekend, finger crossed.
