I am not sure a compressor is up to this. A vacuum cleaner on blow would probably supply more cfm and the pressure difference you actually need for this test is only a few inches of water gauge.

The compressor is 50l 11CFM 150psi 3hp, not a massive compressor but more than a vacuum, i think.

I will start with a very low PSI and build it up as i go as I go.

Sorry.

Inches WG is normally measured using a manometer - a simple U Tube or length of poly pipe formed and held into a U shape. One leg is open to atmosphere and the other leg is connected to the compartment being pressurised. The U Tube is then half filled with water. 27.8 inches of WG is roughly equivalent to 1 psi. For leak detection you probably only need about 4 or 5 inches WG (the pressure of your domestic gas line) as you are only after 'blowing bubbles' and do not want to stress test structure. When reading the manometer it is the difference in height between both legs that gives the pressure achieved.

So a 6 foot length of hose secured to a board in a U shape mark off with a sharpie at 1 inch intervals and number them.

I think that's about it.

Of course you need a way of connecting the compartment to one leg of the manometer and you will need to seal your hatch and wash boards. You may need to close all through hulls too particularly galley sink but also any other authorised openings.

I know it is a risk but is it not likely that your final paint coats will cure this very small leak

That is one thing i dont want to do, infact i will not do, is bodge it with a coat of paint.

I've heard that surveyors use chalk on the hull to pinpoint leaks. Don't know if will help you in this circumstance, but you could always puff some line chalk onto surfaces to see where it's coming in. Relatively easy cleanup afterwards...?

Bit since i have been over the moon with this boat but today



I got home early today as things changed at work so i decided to get on with this leak detector idea i had using a compressor and the gadget i used above.



The sikaflex had been setting for a good 5 days i think.



One point i should mention is that when you fit the air line MAKE SURE the pressure on the reg is down to near 0 not 130psi.

Yes while the pressure was building up i connected the air line to the gadget ( must of been around 100psi actually ) and pop, it blew the seal

Still i did not flip and used a prop to see if it would seal it enough.

Then i set the reg properly and slowly went to about 7psi which is when i started to hear a very slight whistle from somewhere

I started on the rail feet and just moved over to the hatch surround and hey ho


THERE SHE BLOWS

So what a complete A hole that has been and an easy way to find it with air after all.

Next job on the list, i have taped it over to keep the water out and it will be sealed this week.

Just booked the bank holiday week off so 10 days to play boat`s

Update

Now i got a bit done done this weekend. As it has been nice i thought i would get the repairs done to the cabin top. Just a matter of using some Creeping Carck, bit of a waste though as i couldnt get all the water out the laminate but it did get through as it strated to drip into the cabin. very watery. That was another reason i didnt want to bother with resin as i knew there would be little chance of drying it out enough for resin.



Besides that i fitted the deck drains at last.

Just a matter of slitting the fitting to take an angle grinder spanner so i can tighten them up.

To seal them again i used Sikaflex 291i, just a bead around the recess then fit the drain.

I forgot to get pics of the underside but you get the jist. Just a lock nut and then the compression fitting with a few inch of copper pipe.



Job number two was the anchor locker hatch.

I wanted a risen edge around the hatch opening, just to try and let as little water in as possible. It will get wet enough with the wet anchor and chain.

To do this i just laiminated 4 x 650grm combo to get around 8mm thick edge.



This is where i finished the job last year, by eck that long ago.

Some block were fitted to hold the section that was cut out

Next i taped down Tinfoil around the cut. Tinfoil is great stuff for if you dont have or want to use a release agent like PVA Blue. It will just peal off the finished laminate. Alos it will stop resin running in between the gap and into the locker.

You can see the opening edge where i needed to laminate over to get what i need.

Then just a matter of laminating over

Once set i could see the edge i need to cut back to and marked then used an anlge grinder and slitting disc. Just leaving a little more on thug as i can sand back to get a better fit once it is in place.

Trimmed back to the width i wanted and then tapered the outer edge ready to be filled and made good.

Still a bit go as you can see, plenty of filling and sanding but it should be ok when finished.

I was wanting to get the hatch finished and the rear locker seat hatch laminated but today i had to go out with T and her kids for mothers day ( see Rach we all have to sacrifice on some things lol )



I think was all for this weekend

Not much to look at but i am happy enough of finding and fixing the leak. I am in the process of a shopping list for the week of i have in a few week. In the men time i hope to have finished the insulation, not a great deal to do, and lined out. Run the hot water pipe and deck filler fitted.

Then on my week off i can get on with making the cabin hatch and finish the frame work for the berths/seating and more i hope.

Hopefully, it will be a while off yet, sorry Wayne . As one of the best topics on this site will end once he drives off into the sunset.
Perhaps we should find Wayne another "plant pot" for when this one is completed :encouragement:.
