Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

Re: The plant pot

This is a truly fantastic project. I've just come across it and look forward to the launch. Re the items needed I'll have a dig around and see what comes up.

Me you both, cant wait to get it in the water. and be of you to have a dig around for any bits, thanks.

Re: The plant pot

Thanks i will have a look now ;)

So update

Hi all, yep weather hasnt been the best here eithr, i did a little painting but it went chalky, i did the canopy top to see how it went, the paint went o fine and easy, i had good temps and now ind etc etc, but the due point was out for it so it chalked up, but only in patchs. I was thinking about painting the top deck this weekend but i need a good warmish day, which temps are forecast above 10 deg which is fine as the paint i am using, Jotun Pioner top coat, but it has forecast wind which is not good. I will see how it goes but i am not rushing to get it painted after all the work i have done, dont want to have to prep it all to repaint it if it goes wrong.
One reason i chose this paint is that to recoat in the future there is no prep work need to be done but for a wash down and dry well. My kinda paint :)

I did try to roll then flatt it out with a very expensive and soft non loss bristle bush.......yes right, came out a mess and a good half dozen birstles came off.

So i just rolled it on, I am going to give it another go when i redo the canopy with roller and brush. I did my last boat that way and it came out amazing,

Next job over the next week or so is to make the top screen frames/windows, i have chosen to go with plastic windows as it will save weight over glass. not my favourite but hey ho cant have everything..
I got a shopping list for the ally suppliers which in the end i am 5m short so i need another length now, Not a clue why i am short as i measured not twice but 3 times.

In this bundle is also the Z section for the locker seat hatch`s and the rear deck hatch, i Got Hockey stick profile and flat for the screen frames

20161006_150731.jpg

I started tonight after work.

As i have no angle gauge i used this smart bit of gear i knocked up...like i do lol.

20161006_175247.jpg

To find the corner line i marked outwards from the edges, then i measured and marked down the edges markings and then marked the middle of the marks on the edge lines, joined that with the frame corner to get the angle i need to cut the frame work.

This is slightly off but it was the first trail to se if it worked.

20161006_175235.jpg

20161006_170723.jpg

I used a little of 5mm packing to help set the Jockey profile frame up.

20161006_170730.jpg

20161006_170736.jpg

This is as far as i got, but happy with it

20161006_175211.jpg

To seal it i am getting some 20mmx2mm Neoprene as it will compress down well with only 1.5mm spare. On the inside i am using the 25mm3mm flat ally to pull tight on.

I got some Strippit Max stripper to save me the hassle of sanding down the antifoul at the weekend. It worked a little, needs more done yet but i would say it got 75% off. I certainly paid for it in aches and pains Monday morning afte hours scraping and pressure washing the hull down. Still better than sanding the nasty stuff off..

This is when i applied it, and do a si say not what i do and use full PPE, hell it burns this stuff.

20161002_172339.jpg

Sorry cant find the pics after i cleaned it off. but take it from me its better.........nah its worse as it shows all the old repairs, got my work cut out here :(

Legendary indeed! I've been thru some stuff and picked out some stuff that might be useful. I can send in the post if you can PM me an address please. I've got plenty more boat bits stashed away and will look thru other boxes when I get a spare half hour and update you if I come across anything else possibly useful for Mrs buckingham

It's some s/s fittings (cleats, eyebolts M10, pad eyes, recessed deck hatch handles, flag holder 25mm dia), float switch, hour counter, battery master switch, LED bulbs (white boxes), bilge alarm hooter, orange reflectors for side of trailer, and in the bags about 10 cantalupi (very posh brand!) LED courtesy lights meant for step risers and such like. All brand new. Close up picture of lights below. 10-32volt.

As regards anchor I need to get you pics of what I have so I can choose one. They're in Antibes and I've been busy so stay tuned.

Legend Wayne.....keep up the Stirling effort....great thread

Plenty to come i hope,, i have two week of end of the month :)

I have PM`d you jf, thank you very much. I am just in need of keel rollers now, about a dozen should do i think. Hey i like the courtesy lights :)

You know, i cant wait to retire in about 25 years, things i can do with my time, ( 25 years , by eck that sounds like i am 16 again and just starting my first job )

Re: The plant pot

Now then for the updates on this weekends work. As aid i have two weeks off to get dome what i can, i have a list of the bits i want done before i stat to wire and line it out.

Near Finished *
Finished **

1 Paint canopy **
2 Finish screens frames *
3 Fit Bow rail **
4 Fit Hand rails
5 Fit rubbing strake **
6 Fit lockers and bilge hatch trim *
7 Make Anchor/chain looker
8 raise the canopy by 25mm/1inch

I removed the canopy and painted it in the workshop as rain has been on and off, Good temps including over night and no dew point inside so managed that easy :), shame i can get the boat in the workshop. twp coats of primer and two topcoat.

You get the idea, it is white now, i have lost pictures some how, bit of a strange things i have lost them on my phone and laptop, last nogth my phone turned off and the laptop just turned off and i lost my screen saver and a few things....pictures aswell maybe.

Anyhow

When i measured up materials for the top screen frames i got it all wrong by 50% short. I thought the materials were cheap for them. I had to go back to get more hockey stick profile and now i had to reorder more Neoprene seal, should be here in a few days. I got on with what was needed to be done like clean the frames up and test one screen to see if the seals i have done work and they sealed a treat after a few down pours over night.

As you can see i have used plastic windows, easy to drill, fast speed and a slow feed, this way it softens the plastic and cuts easy with less chance of cracking. Also you can drill within MM of the edge

20161015_150116.jpg

20161015_150108.jpg

20161015_150046.jpg

Neoprene i used is 30mmx1.5mm reason is that i had 1mm spare once the window sat in the frame, i stuck down a neoprene strip dwon and the frame as you can see and one on the window aperture, once the neoprene compresses down it gives a darn good seal.

20161017_121151.jpg

Yes all frames are polished up to match the main windows, wish will need a quiclk going over again soon as i got paint and resin on them when i was faffing with the other jobs.

20161017_120939.jpg

20161017_120931.jpg

This is a quick look ate the frames half fitted, infact this is before i removed them to polish and also make the other two.

20161008_162409.jpg

I have been pulling my hair out, what there is anyhow, i am not the best at getting angles set nice, but i am chuffed with the screens after i sussed an idea to do that. Now the locker frames.....OMG these took me ages to do, thnk it was with the Z section and only having an angle grinder to cut them with, i was at points chucking my tools. All done though in the end :) Sealed down with Sikaflex marine and SS screws.

The ally frame is Z profile 22x32x22....i think lol. I wanted less upright than the 32mm but unable to find any. I will add some hardwood strip or rubber to lift the lid level to the top edge.

20161017_161906.jpg

20161017_163553.jpg

By eck i have been busy, seeing now what i have done in a few days.

Bow rail, I had the help of T to do this, just not possible on my own. I used M8x50mm SS button heads to bolt them in with SS washers and nylocs. I have lost the pics of when i needed to trim the gunnel side as this was ruff cut from the mould and protruding below the strake which looked a mess.So they had to be fitted, marked and then removed, incase i caught the strake with the grinder when cutting back.

Strake took some bending but all went well and no creaking or cracks in the Sapele. Sealed around the bolt with Sikaflex Marine again.

Bow rial fitted to :), this had to be done as water was leaking in the bow with the drill hole i dod a few week back I forgot to cover them with gaffer.

20161017_171654.jpg

20161017_172442.jpg

20161017_172436.jpg

https://s5.postimg.org/rkhaodlmv/20161017_172449.jpg
You may well be thing about the gap in the strake on the bow point, it would of some doing to bend the strake around that, even with making a steamer, i did think of it but then i will be making a SS point to wrap around it with the bow roller to bolt down on.

Thats about it for now, From the list above of jobs before line out, well, all i want to do is fit the rails then i will start to line out while i am waiting for more neoprene to arrive so i can fit the screen windows. and then the canopy can go back on.
I mentioned i want to raise the height of the canopy, this is due to the screen frames being to close to the edge of the canopy, I wanted to use Z profile as with the ocker lids, as aid i couldnt find any small enough which would of looked ok.

Re: The plant pot

Fantastic work . Very impressed with your window trims. I've just spent a frustrating day re-laminating the galley bulkheads - and more tomorrow. Keep at it :encouragement:

Re: The plant pot

Todays update of a few fiddly bits before i make the anchor locker, first was to fit the hand rails. Easy job, along with painting the top screen so we can fit the windows tomorrow and get the canopy back on permanent.

I will get pics again when i fit the canopy and windows tomorrow but for now these are the grab handles i made while practicing my welding,

20161020_134337.jpg

20161020_134301.jpg

Last week when i started to do the screen windows i didnt like how the top of the screen was so close to the canopy, picky i know but its just me, well T says i am a faffer, but i have to like it.

What i did was make this frame from Sapele to lift the canopy 25mm, looks good and gives a nice bit of woodwork to the canopy from the inside, you cant see it much from the outside. A few brackets fro ally were made aswell to lnk them together, although no need for them really but it all helps........something.

They just sit on the screen top in between the screen and canopy.

20161020_173116.jpg

This was the sketch of the locker and set out but it has changed a little as of a while ago. The locker will be a more diamond shape, no bollard and the fairleads will be now cleats for mooring up. In the locker there will be a large cleat to tie the anchor line to and a standard roller. more basic and less rope work.

20161019_154322.jpg

Again i was hoping i had finished with grinding back, not now so i popped off to Machine Mart for some bits, Carbide grinding discs, great for getting back to the matting to laminate to, new goggles and dust decent dust mask, a few times i used the throw away masks but they are near useless on this job.

20161020_115306.jpg

I marked out and 4 inch more the locker and ground back, also around the repair i did, this will beef up the repair more as in the firsst place i didnt do the best job for strength. This should do the trick now.

20161019_150347.jpg

20161020_125547.jpg

All done and once cleaned out ready for the layup. i will be keeping the foam in place but the rear side will be 18mm marine plywood for good strength for the anchor.

20161020_133423.jpg

Now this is clean towards what you get when you use a flap disc or normal grinder.

20161020_131336.jpg

This is what come dust is...well not dust but more fibers. lot easier to clean up.

20161020_133741.jpg

Thats about it for now, tomorrow i will be fitting the window and canopy, and finishing the locker a bit more while it is nice,

Re: The plant pot

excellent progress Wayne, very well done!

few questions though, you're fitting all these ali bits re window frames, ss bits for guard rails, handrails, etc, I assume you're going to take the lot off when you paint the hull, right? When are you planning to do the painting? Seems you're close to finishing the ext and related work!

Also, I'd try to get the screws for the rubbing strake flush or recessed a bit. From the pics they look like they're proud, but not quite sure as I wouldn't expect shortcuts like that from a nutter like you :p

Curious what you're going to use to treat all your sapele. I have fairly large chunks of iroko as toe rail, total of 30m by 20cm wide laying flat looking up to the sky and I originally tried Owatrol (sp?) didn't even last half a season down here, and now tried a local product, which almost lasted a season under the sun.

cheers

V.

Morning V, You may know we are weather is not kind for painting boats over here, either to wet, due point bad, to windy. I am sure i could of painted it all this week though, but the slight wind has put me off. This paint i am using is good stuff, it is Jotun Pioner, it does not need and prep work for second coats or there after. Just a clean down. I have painted the screen as today when i get out the pit, i will fitting the windows. All deck fittings have had there foot prints and more painted already so when i come to paint it fully next year i dont have to be to carefull masking the edges.
The rails had to be fitted now as i need to get the fit out started and if i dont fit the rails etc then i cant get to the inner fittings. Same as the strake, and on the strake, i now i hang my head in shame, the button heads do protrude and i should of sunk them in. Now though i am going to redo with these counter sunk

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M4-M5-M6-...-SCREW-/181276846436?var=&hash=item6fd43f7275

Just a matter of putting a temp bolt in the bow end of the strake to stop it springing out and breaking the Sikaflex seal., and working back.

Timber, i have used a few types of treatment over the years, i loved varnish but hell no, to much hard work. What i use now all the times is Danish oil, not sure which but it has been good., on this it is clear, my last was dark oak`y colour.

EDIT

This oil V

Re: The plant pot

I used the Coloron Danish oil on our kitchen cabinets just a few days ago, it's good stuff, but I'd say no better than the same that I can buy from Toolstation for no doubt a fraction of the price, which is what I use on my boat.

Again, great progress, you're putting Vas to shame over the years he took.......:)::D:)

I first went with Coloron as it had good feedback, never really bothered to look around for others, if it works it fine by me. I spend to much time choosing what nuts and bolts to use lol

Hey Vas`s boat is twice the size though lol.

Update

I have had a real pain in the *** of a weekend. I didnt plan to get the anchor locker all done but with things not going....again to plan i am behind a weee bit. Some thing to do with buying the wrong size bolts for the screen.
Saying that though i am very happy with the finished canopy. But for 3 bolts i cut down to short and canopy hand rails need bolting down it is done.

How the weekend went. First was to start the locker.

All i did was use a few strips of 650 combo matt to hold the sides inplace.

20161022_141146.jpg

Add two 650 combo inside, just makes it easier to do than laminating through the hatch.

20161022_141151.jpg

Here i drilled up from the corners of the locker so i can see where to mark out for cutting the hatch from the outside.

20161021_104604.jpg

Then laminate once the 18mm marine ply back is held in place, i just drilled a few holes the it so i push nails through into the foam.

20161022_141848.jpg

Then three laminations all over. this should give a rough 6mm thickness. I will be adding two more though, i want it strong as the anchor rode will be cleated off this.

20161022_150336.jpg

That is afar as i got with it, near done from the inside and i will be marking out the hatch for cutting out.

Neoprene strip on the aperture

20161021_123342.jpg

20161021_123953.jpg

Also on the frames

20161017_121151_1.jpg

Then all was is a matter of cutting back the sixty 45mm screws i had got down to 20-22mm, not good but time time consuming and when i want a job done i just tend to moan and get it done lol.

Inside the canopy i used dome nuts to finish a bit better than nylocs. I am thinking i need some ally or wood strip to go around the inner frame yet. Good for now though.

The end result

20161022_134609.jpg

20161022_134604.jpg

20161022_140807.jpg

As said rails need bolting but i have ran out now. And just got an order delivered with a load of new counter sunk strake and deck wares bolts.

20161022_135044.jpg

20161022_135533.jpg
20161022_135541.jpg

And last good pic of overall view.............yep i am chuffed and feel good that it is all done on the out side but for a few little bits like grab handles etc

20161022_135224.jpg

Hope you like :)

Re: The plant pot

Thanks guys, as always with me i like it but certain angles i dont, only as the canopy/screen looks to high. It does not help with that being the only white bit. I can be hard work at times lol.

Going to pop out now and get a countersunk bit to fit new bolts in the strake. Then do more of the locker once i find my black markers lol.,
