Buckingham 20 restoration, formerly Plant Pot

Re: The plant pot

Bloody hell.....WELL DONE! Great thread. I'm mega impressed. How on earth did you learn all those skills. Do keep posting even though it makes some of us feel totally incompetent!

+ 1 on that. I think He taught himself most of this and I love the way he manages to do things very cheaply. So many people think boating is only for the well off and to some degree this can be true but this chap shows people the other side of the coin and the speed at which he works is incredible.

I think those that mostly employ others to do their work should be inspired by this thread to have a go themselves.

Re: The plant pot

Really appreciate the comments guys, I just love DIY, on cars and boats, infact anything, i see if some body else can do it then i can, maybe not as good as a pro but still i did it, makes me feel chuffed that i have done and not paid somebody else to do it. No pride in the project them. Admit it can be stressful at times, and dam hard work, but as said, you sit back and see what you have done and feel better about it.
And boats as we know are not cheap, this one is but then is not, what i have spent i dont want to know, i could of gone and got one ready to go, thing is it will not be in as good nick as this when done.
Would be good if this encourages more folk to DIY more, such pride when you do.

thanks again for the comments :)

Yesterday i started the side ribs, got one side done as i cant get to the other yet until i push the boat over so its one side at a time. amazing how much sturdier it is with just the bearers and ribs in.

As the original were 2x2 i used the same, i could of used the old fixing holes but in the 40 years of this boats life it has had a new strakes/ribs fitted as you mite be able to make out in the pics. Instead though i drilled more for these new ribs, not decide yet if i will be fitting wooden rubbing strakes but thye are there for when i do decide.

I kept the same length of ribs, as the hull is a little curved it braced the new ones in place.

q7XZLB3.jpg

the lower rib goes through the bulkhead, thought it mite help keep more rigid.

y6fkA9n.jpg

Oh yes more grinding/sanding back was needed for the good surface for laminating later, thank god for dust masks

7vakvc4.jpg

To ensure i got the correct line for drilling hole from the outside i drilled small holes along the bottom of the batten so then on the outside i could find the correct line for drilling for the fixing the screws. i stuck a few screws in the holes to find the holes easier.

OfClD00.jpg

I drilled and counter sunk the holes for the fixing screws and marked just so i know where they are, going loopy a bit nowadays so these little things help lol.

e7lci1C.jpg

I just used N o5 30mm screws to hold it place as the GRP will do the main job. As said above i started to laminate tonight but i am tired and as yesterday aslo i forgot to radius the edges of the battens to get a better bond of the GRP and made a mess of it so instead of chucking a spanner......eerrr brush, i left it and will amend maybe tomorrow. No big deal.

Re: The plant pot

At long long last we have a floor fitted, and fitted good aswell i reckon, I used 18mm hardwood ply for it, aso the same for the transom which is to be shown later on in this post.

To get the shape of the rear section i just measured the width every 18 inch, as the sheet is a full 2440mm or eight foot it reached the last bearer with leaving 3 inch, or 75mm at the bulkhead, i dont mind this as i want a full air flow through the bilge as there is also a 4 inch gap in the bow. I am complicating things here with imperial and metric, sorry Dont know why i do that.

CxkGl2u.jpg

Then the front i used a long straight edge with a marker pen taped to it to get the curver as near as possible, then to find the curve i measured the width evey 6 inch and marked it down on the sheet, you can just see the line in the pic below. .

HKbadc2.jpg

With the help of my lacky :))) w eused a ally strip, a part we ddint use the the windows as were not needed, it help get the curve of the bow floor.

BcgdbZb.jpg

DlT6wNw.jpg

And hey presto the floor ready to be fettled by chamfering the edge to sit lower on the bearers and bring the edge closer to the hull for a better fit.

3xR63xa.jpg

We resined the floor all over to give a better water proof finish and longer lasting also.

z4ywRhX.jpg

I sanded all around the egde of the floor before i laid it in place, again for better holding of the new resin and wiped don with acetone.

2pikGHm.jpg

pcODeuW.jpg

Bilge hatch, hope i got this in the correct place lol

OXJcfik.jpg

At this stage i used the Purocol again to stick the floor to the bearers and then screwed it down to them, this aint going anywhere ;)

The EXPERIMENT :))) worked, i messed the other day with this to see how it would go, and its dam good stuff, i used some of the Cascamite and instead of using water to mix it i used the fibreglass resin to get a filler of what ever consistency i need, i sampled it on a few bits of wood to wood and also wood to fibreglass. Once i found that was good i used it as a filler for the damage to the hull, christ it sticks well, pig to sand back though, still though better than car body filler which is easy sand as its water proof unlike car filler.

I used it all around the egde of the floor to give a dam good hold for the floor and to help blend the floor to the hull for laminating.

814SPVz.jpg

qWc7AmO.jpg

That was left to set for a good few hours before the last stage and that was to laminate the edge of the floor in place with two laminations of 450grm CSM, as usual.

svnkBtT.jpg

MKGxwai.jpg

I havnt yet sampled how solid it feels but it felt good with just the floor on the bearers, this hull should be good know for the extra strength, i have done it this much incase we do get to take it to sea,

Re: The plant pot

Now the transom, BIG job again as it needs to be stronger for if taken to sea therefore its made from two 18mm hardwood ply sheet laminated together with the Cascamite resin again, `poo to a blanket` i think they call it.
Its is not complete yet a si ran out of resin filler, will get some ASAP.

Sorry no detailed pics but i just cut the shape the first sheet with a good overlap around the old transom, well what left as it will be getting bolted to it along with resin filler and laminating.

Spread a nice layer all over the first sheet before we clamped and screwed it all together to hold it good and tight.

RfVgfA3.jpg

Here it is when dreid the day after, here you can see i chamfered the edge all around where it will meet the original transom, this is to get a smooth blend in for the grp to geta good hold and no sharp corners, CSM does not go around sharp corners.

Jeu8nZj.jpg

Rcl3i9O.jpg

The new transom is going to be resin/glued and screwed to the 3x2 beam before cutting out the engine gap, not a clue what that part is called but where the engine clamps to, and all laminated over in and out to make good. plus a few more bits though inbetween.

I have to say this boat is killing me, but i love it, cant darn wait to get it on the canal :) eight months to go, as if hey :(

Re: The plant pot

Fantastic project read all your posts today. Keep up the good work and the great posts. This is proper Practical Boat Owner!

Re: The plant pot

When I saw the first post I thought it was a troll but when I saw the boat being craned I thought "Hang on..." . Really following your posts with interest now and looking forward to seeing the boat in the water. Keep us posted, one of the best threads/projects I've ever seen on here...:encouragement::encouragement::encouragement:

Re: The plant pot

I have been called worse than a troll at times lol. And your `Warning - Internet forums may contain nuts` is so true, people think i am a full KP bag of fully slated :) but i love it :)

Not much has been done, a few problems have turned up, first i was getting some sanding done and the sander decided to pack in, motor burned out, i thought it was the brushes so i replaced them but it is the motor, not even mine as i borrowed it off a mate so i need to replace it for him now, oh and them a few days ago i was getting on with the transom, griding back the edge and the grinder packed in sad.png

Now as it was i had just and the moment the grinder packed in, finished tapering the edge for the new transom so i could atleast do a bit more, and a bit is was. I ran out of resin to get the part i wanted to, just the outer skin.

A quicky of what i have done to the boat.

I used perspex again, as i had it lying around and trying to hold back on pennies, like £20 on a sheet of wood lol.

52wHGBA.jpg

wh0k8sD.jpg

I know it looks a bodge up but have a bit of faith it will be fine when done wink.png You can just see i have blued it, two coats is plenty.

2znsU0l.jpg

I laminated four of the 450grm again to give the 6mm thickness but around the edge another two, so six in all.

kOJfKWv.jpg

OPmivgJ.jpg

This i left overnight then came the time to pray i dont break the perspex as i want this for the other side, i can get heavy handed at times and break things, all went good though, a hose pipe and a wedge and wiggle and it came free easy.

CdcCD1h.jpg

S2mrxVN.jpg

trimmed back a little needs more when ready to do the rest and other side.

Re: The plant pot

Todays job, dont ask why but all i did wall cll a local joiners for a price for the rubbing strakes and i just said yes i will have them, and when funds have gone awol with tools breaking and car needs work done asap.

I am using Sapele again like my last boat i did. this wood is great to work with and look lovely when stained with Dutch oil, it is 60mmx20mm and bull nosed, i got the joiners to do it for me, saves me faffing with the router myself

No big deal in pics or info as its basic wooden bits drilled and well thats it.

dCqCkh8.jpg

I have got them drilled and sanded back, a good few judder marks on them and even small damage marks, i will go to the other joiners i did last time for the lower strakes. 15 miles away but good quality job done and service, not keen of being charged more than said.

na4somk.jpg

Well that was boring wasnt it, so here is a bit of fun, i am sad lol. In between thr last few updates i was told i need to move my stuff, well junk lol. I have made a tool trolly to keep my gear inplace, to be honest i am greatfull of it as i am sick of spending time looking for my tape measure, square, drills etc etc.

I used a few off cuts of the ply i got for the boat, i can get more when needed for it. And the fittings are from a caravan i ripped out once, the brass handle from a pile of boat bits i found in the shed.

XgREpit.jpg

iepmJsa.jpg

pCin4cx.jpg

oQFPANc.jpg

Now lets see if i remeber to put the tools away in the cabinet.....

Now a better update as this affy after work i started to do a bit more on the transom, it will be set tomorrow fully so then i can get on with the rest, as its is going to be a good weekend for weather i hope to get a lot done, maybe even upto the engine well being worked on.

I did the same as the other half here but the lower 8 inch of the vertical joint i made it real strong, not that it matter a great deal as the ply transom will be going in next.

Blued

CgUfYVU.jpg

IrKUgSH.jpg

And laminated

zTtVMyJ.jpg

Icje5SC.jpg

Oh yes, i am not sure if folk have been taking note but when fibreglassing you need a good cleaned finish to laminate to, and my grinder has packed in, so time to improvise, i have some grinder sanding disc here, and a drill, and a bolt with large washers and nut, just need to get the disc as central a sposs..rack of the eye will do and hey ho we have a HD sander

nBsCkhd.jpg

bX3jKWy.jpg

Easy sands back the GRP with 36g, mite even try it with a cutting disc. Dowt it will explode as a drill doesnt go as fast as a grinder, but fast enough to cut GRP.

so keep [poppingback this weekend to see more, i plan to get loads done........dam i said it PLAN, i dont make plans for a good reason.

Re: The plant pot

Not to rush a job i have done a wee bit and the rest tomorrow, which will be to laminate it in.

I didnt get any pics of the resin filler i used to laminate the ply to the transom skin, i am set of getting it done as resin sets in minutes, i just mixed a resin and powder filler to a concistancey it would just hold and not run. we added it to the top batten to bond to the sanded and cleaned corners, screwed up tight and then screwed tight back with battens until it just squeezed out.

This was before i started to faff with fitting the ply transom,.the perspex came away a treat, just soaked again and left for 20 mins and it peeled of easy.

PAvVFGP.jpg

MMmm i seem to of lost some pics, but i marked out for the engine well and cut out with the adaption i made for the drill, this time i used a cutting disc, worked a treat, also used it for sanding again, no choice as still no grinder.

BhdwMUe.jpg

eYflggx.jpg

cbFqCdd.jpg

A couple of cuts and a plunge and the ply was done.

0rAIczJ.jpg

tC7z7hh.jpg

In situ

IKIvH0w.jpg

To help it to pull tight i used battens screwed through, here you can see how nice and smooth and shiny the new GRP is with the reflection in the new GRP. :).

1P6A3qi.jpg

So all done and setting, its will not far be set after an hour but as said, no rush, tomorrow i will remove the battens and clean back the over sill and laminate the inside and resin the edges ready for the edging to go on, if i can i will use a plastic guttering for a mould to get a nice smooth, if not then i will see.

m5aDDoI.jpg

Re: The plant pot

Today i was all set for getting the transom laminated in place and trimmed and then get on with the engine well, but nope, still though happy with where i am with it, it got a back end now :) And by eck it is solid, i am sure it take a 30hp out board if i wanted to.

Sorry but the pics dont show much of what has been done as its mainly laminating, but a few steps of how i got there.

First thing this morning i removed the battens. And i was well chuffed with the strength eve with out the laminating to be done.

PNYLsRp.jpg

N0yajkK.jpg

The filler i used sets like so hard i couldnt get this excess i missed, no bother as its not in the way,

tauKmnP.jpg

The better side i cleaned back a little before it set.

BeYGYyG.jpg

Before laminating the inside of the transom i need to add a bit of a fillet into the top corner, this is for the CSM to follow better, CSM does not go well into sharp corners, i used again the filler to do with the help of a borrow of a spoon fromn the kitchen, yes T caught me aswell :( lol

k45zcwW.jpg

The filler is basic resin with the addition of very fine glass powder, all you do is add the powder untill you get the consistency you want.

4kiBmSZ.jpg

Krfl8PO.jpg

Then slap it on

tq10ZsS.jpg

Next step was to laminate, easy......until you are half way through and first your roller decides to fall apart, so you work a bit quicker with the brush, then that decides to loose all it bristles in the resin :(
No panic, shoot off down to the bargain shop for a new set, i should of kept with the ones i know are safe with resin, trouble is they are only 2.5inch briush`s, when on a job this big you need either a big brush 4 inch, or better a roller to apply the resin.

I got back with the small brush`s with the last two laminations to do, i did three over the whole area and 2 more along the edge to make sure.

As said cant see much in the pics but its there and setting.

SpUJKUh.jpg

I cleaned back and here you can see where i add the fillet for the CSM

1xKhEnH.jpg

Re: The plant pot

While that was setting i was set to make the trim for the top.

PcCDy31.jpg

The cross section is 4x3x2.5, i have been trying to find a length of guttering or down pipe but unable to find one of a size to use or cut down, I was then going to use the perspex and make ny own channel, nah to much faffing when its not really a structural part, here i need to blend the section in to the gunwale corners

XxByV5w.jpg
For this a chamfer back

EI3he6O.jpg

As far as i got was to make the sheet of GRP i need to get the lengths out, three 450grm for this, then they will be bedded down on more resin filler, you will see when i get back on it tommorrow

DXxcc6T.jpg

I am leaving this to set for 24hrs, or until i get home after work tomorrow, it will be good enough to cut into lengths then.

phOB2ME.jpg

As that was setting i wanted to look at the engine well and what i can do, yes i do a si got most the time. I still have the old engine well here and the idea was to use that, or what was left of it, very little actually.
ELgMfe3.jpg

I decided by the time i had cut and shut it to fit, then patch up i mite aswell make a new one, maybe use the base still, that is a sfar as i got, was a bit tired and hungry and had to tale Zig out for a change.

Not all to sure if to use ply and laminate over or use GRP sheets to make the engine well, i will sleep on it like i do and decide later, either way it will do the job.

Re: The plant pot

So update on this wee project. It is now actually feeling like I am getting somewhere. please bear with me as I am doing all this on my phone.
The transom is finished and trimmed off now . Just made a grp sheet and fixed it in place with bridge filler.

Also the deckis cut resined and ready to fit one the engine well is done.. this week I am laminating the engine well ready to go in this weekend. Subject to weather.
Oh yes you can see that it has the rear bearers and side batteries in now.
Well would you believe it I have worked out how to get pic's on here off my phone. Still not got a lwith as I am doing all this on my phoneptop :(

My new favourite thread, please don't stop posting pictures. Your work rate is phenomenal!

Re: The plant pot

Wow. Brilliant work. I'm fighting the temptation to search the web for the finished project but will just wait for the updates. :D

Well done.

Re: The plant pot

Stunned with your rate of progress. Talk about Fast & Furious !!!

It did slow once winter hit as i needed to do some more GRP work and i dont like to do it in freezing temps so that held me back a lot, and then painting etc etc. but still its getting there.

My new favourite thread, please don't stop posting pictures. Your work rate is phenomenal!

More pics coming, i wasnt sure if there would be much interest on these old clapped out boats on this forum to tell the truth, but as there is i will keep it up ;).

Wow. Brilliant work. I'm fighting the temptation to search the web for the finished project but will just wait for the updates. :D

Now that is not allowed lol, and it is under a different name anyway ;) Not yet finished but i am close to fit out stage assoon as a big job is done which will be along soon.

Simply amazing, very well done, this is one of the moat interesting threads for ages. Thanks for taking the time to keep it so updated, I am amazed you have the time!!

Thanks for the encouragement ;) it is needed at times, but i love it.

Now where was i

Oh and i fettled the dint in the port side, i have just pushed it out with e 3x2 and used a batten fixed in place with the resin filler and then laminated over it to push it out as good as poss, i will leave for a day or so until i will fill the outside area to make good.

Hope it holds.

I have just started to work on the head ( in the correct boaty name for the loo ) ok it looks big for a small boat, which infact it is at being 3` x 3` 4" but it is going to be a wet room and on all the cruiser i have had you can barely, one way to put it but, wipe your backside. In this head you can do that and more with ease....ooo errrr :)

We have worked on the interior plans so we can get a good size double that is offset to the port side with a bunk above to port above the double when needed for the third berth, only for the grandson/child so not a full 6`6" long, the galley to starboard as one unit.

I will draw a plan up of it to show give a better idea of the set out.

Just got from meeting Steve a good chap who made the tanks. Like I do I went straight out to try them out. I have to say I am over the moon with them. A perfect fit.
Have to sat a big thank you to you again Steve. Excellent fab skills. ;-)

The tanks will connected together top and bottom with 15mm speed fit fittings and top pipe will be T'd off up the corner for a vent pipe.

Re: The plant pot

Bit tired this afternoon so just tried the strakes to see if they would snap when bent around the bow. I did it with a Creighton I had and it worked without steaming the timber.
Also done a little more sanding. What I want to do is at least get the top strakes on as inside I need to next insulate then line it but if I do I will not be able to get to the back fittings for the strake.

Oh and fixed the box eye block in. That will be good and solid when the resin filler is set and laminated over.

These updates are getting naff sorry. Little done today, to tired and not in the mood :'( yesterday I decided to paint the front deck as it will show up better where the imperfections are......wish I didn't now. Loads of small areas of tiny hole that need filling. Chuffed with the bow though, can't see the join from the repair.
I will be back with a bit more asap, I want to laminate the far deck and locker top asap I can't see the canopy lasting all winter. Oh and deck dràins will be done. Pics not the best sorry.

Hi all, at last i have done a little bit to Wet Dreams, not been able to do a whole lot as with the weather and dam cats it has put me back a little, also my own mistake. I was going to laminate in the bow eye bolt beam first off i forgot to cover the front deck holes where the mooring bollard will be refit, there fore rain water has gone threw onto the timber so until that dries i cant do that, not the weather for things to dry to quick.
Also CATS for god sake they do my head in, i like them but not when its like living in a cats home, had trouble in the past with them pooing all over the garden and drive, i sorted to much expense, now they have been walking on the tarp, well looks like they jumped on and then thought `eck its slippy` so claws out and they put claw holes all over the tarp and i have had to wait until the rain stopped and i could dry it before repairing it., I wasnt impressed as also after sanding the boat down it has opened some tiny pin holes from old repairs that have also let water seep through to the inside where i was going to insulate it.

So after a bad few week and recent days i have cut out the rear deck hatch and sealed all the wood with resin as usual. oh yes before that i fixed the damage in the tarp.

i think thats all in have done since the last update, and sorry no pics but i will get some asap.
