I am currently looking to change boats, but am getting frustrated with contacting numerous different brokers only to find they all seem to be offering the same boat - often with differing prices and descriptions! They then all ask if they can put mine on there books.
Is this the norm (first time we have looked to sell)? Should I let everyone offer mine for sale and if so do I only pay the succesful one.

Sell the boat yourself! save the brokerage fees! you can buy a lot of advertising for the amount you would pay a broker! You can get a contract which complys with the law from RYA free!

In my experience, whether they have your permission or not they will advertise your boat if they can think they can sell it and then contact you with buyer on arm!

I'd advertise privately!

I advertised mine on boatsforsale.com and mby.com and the first to see bought. If you want a good cheap broker try boatmatch.com. Only 2% commission. Try looking at the two web sites I suggested for your new boat. They have a mix of private and brokerage. If your find something you like ask for photos inside and out. You can save a lot of wasted journeys that way.

Is Boatmatch a real broker or just a listing site?

Surprised they can make it pay if so, just travelling to the boat to show a prospective customer must cost so much time and money...

A slightly late post somewhat, but (Kim) I feel in this case I have a right of reply. Ari, boatmatch offers exactly what it says on the can, a full brokerage service. OK, we do not see every boat, but we are closely involved with all sales and manage the contractual side and money in about 80% of cases. We have now sold close to 80 boats since launch and currently have deals moving on a variety of boats including a Sunseeker Portofino in Minorca, a Van de Stadt 49' in Turkey , Princess 50 & 420 in the UK and a Princess 22M in Sweden.
Even after only just three years we have a high level of repeat business and a lot of very happy customers.
So whether you like it or not, we are a brokerage and we're here to stay.
