Brokerage fee rip off?

www.yachtsnet.co.uk.

He charges I think 6% but I agree the big boys are on a mega Great British ripoff. Same as everything with boats really. Own a boat and every where you turn you get ripped off awful.

Has anyone seen the sun?

Somewhere between 6 to 8% seems to be the norm. Don't forget to add the VAT so you might expect to pay something approaching 10%. It's even better than being an Estate Agent (no I'm neither an agent for houses or boats!!!)

Its only a rip off if people use their services and pay the fees. Dont do it - try everything else first before resorting to a broker.

Try posting an add in PBO or similar mag, anyone seriously looking to buy would be searching the classifieds in yachting mags,
so what are brokers doing for their several thousand pounds per boat and why is it a percentage of the selling fee? Does it cost more for there services on a boat at £100,000 as opposed to one at £10,00? After all, anyone one buying pays for liftouts, surveys etc.

Brokers generally charge 10% (+VAT) if there is an overseas componant in the sale i.e: you or the boat or, the buyer is abroad - be aware particualrly of this point which can give people a shock if they don't read the small print!!!!!

Of course some brokers charge a minimum fee which can work out at 10% or more, e.g: min charge £500 on a boat sale of £5,000!

It is fair to say however that brokers tend to do more work for their money than estate agents, as brokers do conveyancing which the lazy estate agents don't (.....mind you, would you trust them for that?!!). However 10% is exhorbitant! As is 8% in most cases. It is quite possible to make a profit if 5% is charged but many brokers would cause uproar at that suggestion.

Boatmatch charges 2% sole and 3% joint listing ...it's free to list and they have many satisfied customers.......http://www.boatmatch.com .....how other brokers charge in excess of 5% is daylight robbery.

As someone at the other end (buying a boat) I would say most brokers have a real cheek...

Very few seem to have a good background knowledge of the boat and very reluctant to provide information generally.

All I can say is that I've put miles on my car and got my first grey hairs climbing dodgy rotten step ladders.. wonder what the HSE would say about that!
