I have my little Westerly on a swinging mooring, over the weekend some 'Bilge Rats' decided to smash the locks and help themselves to my belongings! I remove most things of value but it still added up to a chunky sum.

I have to say GJW insurance have been professional and swift in dealing with my claim which has eased the pain of a particularly annoying episode.:encouragement:

I hope whoever took my new box of coastal flares and lifejackets (amongst other things) find themselves in a sticky situation where they get scalded by the flares, fall overboard and the co2 fails to inflate the jackets!

Very annoying but just think how much more you enjoy being the type of person you are than they do being the type of person they are. What a sad and pitiable existence they must live. You, on the other hand, will get your money back off the insurance that you were smart enough to buy and then carry on having an enjoyable and happy life sailing your boat.

I had some shytes take some brand new lifejackets from my Foxcub on Windermere. Who breaks into an 18ft boat?
Sadly there are dick-heads everywhere who like your possessions.

Thedreamoneday,

sorry to hear that.

Last year our club had a series of break-ins to cruisers ashore and afloat, all the same MO; broken hatch, small non-boaty things like torches, radios, knives stolen - worst thing was the damage.

Then a boat afloat got it, this time they threw the generator over the side out of sheer spite.

Shortly after, the Coastguard was called to a youngster trapped in the mud, the photo made the Daily Mail; showing a clear set of footprints out to another club boat...

This scrote and his lowlife chums only got a warning of course, but now they know we have their ID ( and maybe DNA ? ) they haven't returned, touchwood.

They ought to put something in the water on sink estates to stop them breeding...

Throwing gear over is just spiteful!

Unfortunately, I suspect this is another boaty type person which makes it worse in my view, as most (pretty much all) boaties I've met have gone out their way to help me during the short time I've been involved with the sport.

I know these type of people are a minority so I'll just wipe my mouth, buy the replacement gear with the insurance an move on.

Cheers

It wasn't a boaty person, they were caught; 4 x 14 yr olds from the local council estate; the only time they've been near a boat in their lives is to damage and / or steal...

I think this is a post misinterpretation, I meant whoever targeted my boat I think was a boaty person.

Cheers

I have suffered two break-ins in 6 months in my factory. Doubtless they will return when I have restocked with materials.

Next time I will be prepared.

The plan is to detect entry and scare them off with very loud noise emitters.

The first time, they were recorded on CCTV but were masked and, despite the best efforts of the police, they could not be traced.

The approach route is now covered with high definition CCTV sufficient to record number plates. Peripheral CCTV allied with the number plate reader should give the police a chance.

For my boat, I have a smoke emitter. If this is not reset before entry, the fumes are choking (and hopefully toxic). There is also a shrieker to alert others and deter the scroats.

A few weeks ago I found muddy footprints on the boat but nothing taken it looks as though they had used a dinghy too get to the boat and last year I had a stern light stolen this was at Heswall, where were you moored?

Mines at West Kirby, I too think a dinghy was used as it just wouldn't have been practical for them to walk ashore carrying all the loot!

I was bought up on a "sink estate". I am now a headmaster of a school. Not everyone on estates is a crook. there are plenty of rich crooks in the City of London

Yes sorry my misunderstanding; all I can say is I know two people who have had to claim from GJW - one for accidental damage and the other a complete boat write-off, and both were sorted quickly with no quibble, hope that's the case with you.

Rosewood, sorry I was not entirely serious; but the estate I have in mind is absolutely notorious, must be some good folk there who just keep their heads down...

I do sort of know where you are coming from but its never good practice to tar everyone with the same brush. there are bad people in all walks of life. If they broke into my boat I would want to do something illegal to them;)
