Brit engines

Just had a quick look on Google seems they have been out of business for a long time. There is one for sale on gumtree, looks to be an old petrol donk with a magneto.

It, to me, spells TROUBLE..........................................

Of course it could be restored, I have done many, many antique engines including an open crankshaft Crossley, but if no parts are available it will be very expensive to have them made, if indeed, any are required. I once had a piston machined from billet aluminium for a 1924 Levis two stroke with a deflector crown piston.

If its just a non runner with compression, easily sorted.

If stuff is worn beyond use or missing, expensive.

PM me if you want further advice.

Just reminiscing...

Salcombe Harbour had a Brit powered launch when I had a summer job there in 1970 something.

Only 8HP in a heavy carvel built boat. But so quiet when just pootling along. Bit noisy in reverse though.

Bro has one, last run in 1976, boat long gone, it has been in his garage 45 years. Should be OK.....
He doesn't want to run it, necessarily, maybe just find a home for it.

Last summer I came across a nicely restored clinker launch locally built by Edgar Cove in Salcombe.

Got chatting to the owner. Turned out it was the very same boat his family used to hire off Coves for their summer holidays: when he found it he just had to have it.

Nice restoration, of course with a modern diesel.

But the boat had its original name:
" Brit"

Reckon a proper restoration could have used your Bro's engine...

I IRC Brit Engineering ran from 1935 to 1963. There will not be any agents for an engine that old! They are real museum pieces nowadays, but had a massive reputation in their day 60 + years ago! There may possibly be some old boy still tinkering with them in a shed somewhere? You never know.

Anyone know someone who deals with/repairs these, Henley area?
The 5HP single one I had in a Folkboat a long time ago had overhead camshaft.Very reliable but not much power, tried everything to get more umph but failed.Later ones were side valve.

There are people who collect old engines and exhibit them at steam fairs and such like.
Maybe look for a specialist forum?

The antique open crankshaft Crossley engine I renovated mechanicaly 35 years ago is doing just that. It can pump water, top turnips and grind corn and oatmeal for chicken feed. It had its full range of accessories with it. It belonged to the village blacksmith in Kirtlington, North Oxfordshire who kept a couple of Jersey cows and had a bit of a smallholding. I renovated it for his son soon after he died.

Can be seen at the Horton Show most years.

It runs from a Camping Gaz bottle now, the new owners wife wont have pertrol in their van. Cant stand the smell.
