Bristol Channel Sailing

We may have to go back to South Wales after a number of years sailing in the Solent. So, we have been looking places in the Bristol Channel and in particular the Newport Uskmouth Sailing Club, because we have a house not very far from there. Are there any forumites here who belong to the Newport uskmouth sailing club; any info please?

Again thanks there's been some great advice, I want to stop at the club and I know there's a lot of knowledge there I can use. I think though I just have to get out there and experience it, I'm itching for a sail as the boat was lifted out a week before I bought it.

I'm just South of Shrewsbury, so the drive down to Newport is a pretty one (well better then going North and takes 2 hours usually, about the same as going to North Wales). When I was looking at cruising grounds I was looking at North Wales (Pwhelli or Menai), as I know the area better. I also considered the Solent as I have a friend who will sail with me who lives in the New Forest, we thought about sharing mooring costs but it really was way more then we could afford. Sundance came up for sale in Newport and it made total sense to keep her there, cheap safe moorings, friendly and secure club, plus about the same traveling time for me and my mate from the New Forest (even though he won't sail all the time with me). I just want to understand the area better, I've been studying the Blue Book and different clubs websites for guides tips etc but thought it would be wise to ask on here as well.

Plans for next year will be;
Get a few safe sails, get use to the boat and immediate area.
Hang about at the back of a few club races/cruises.
Couple of trips to Cardiff in various states of tide/weather as this will be the port to run too, Swansea and Milford Haven if I want a longer/night sail.
I would like to get up the Avon to Bristol if I can find someone to follow up, I know it won't be a great sail but might make a nice long weekend with the family.
What I would really like to do is Newport to Infacombe (I'm guessing we can do this one HW to HW) and then round to Padstow via Lundy, stop a few days and head back up.

I've just joined NUSC a few months ago so feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to help, but there may be other members with more knowledge then me on here?!?

I'm really looking forward to it, but I want to be prepared. I've got the Blue Book and the Peter Cumberlidge guide (which doesn't seem as good compared).

Go on Abebooks and find the ?2001 edition of David Taylor's Lundy and Irish Sea pilot. I think I paid about a pound for my copy a couple of years ago. It covers lands end to Scotland including the BC and is much more detailed in the BC than the Cumberlidge one. Although it is 15 years old not a whole lot has changed and the things that have (like the Cardiff Barrage!) are fairly obvious. I find myself leafing through it as my usual first reference.

You may find a better offer sooner than we can make this happen, but once you have a couple of sails under your belt, I'd be happy to sail down to Cardiff, meet up with you, and sail in convoy up to Bristol so that you can get a feel for it. There are few more spectacular approaches to any harbour in the world, it is said, than Bristol Harbour, and it certainly is spectacular. (It's also actually fairly simple - the only 'difficulty' is Swash Bank at the mouth of the Avon, which necessitates leaving it as late as you dare to turn in on the way up the Severn, and then hugging the pierhead until the channel turns. If you look at a chart you'll see what I mean. It's easy to make it sound more difficult than it actually is, though...)

Hi Tom
I am a member of NUSC but as you are doing such a good job representing the club I didnt feel the need to comment, any questions you are asked which you fail to answer by all means contact me.

Thanks for the offer, I'll see what cruises the club are running next year but it's always good to meet up with different and new people.

Cheers
