What boat for £10k

If my memory is correct I looked at a Centaur an A or B layout but it suffered from that awful idea that the crew sat squeezed up round a table looking at the bloody kitchen and for that reason I rejected it and bought an Albin Vega .A friend bought a Fulmar and there is no comparison to a Centaur which pretends to emulate a caravan meanwhile the Albin Vega offers the proper acomodación of a seagoing smal yacht
Not only that, but the Vega feels like a proper sailing boat. It may not be that quick by modern standards, but it's a well mannered little thing.

But but it, the Centaur was designed ly that legendary designer Laurent Giles.

The fulmar woukd need a lot spending on it to get it up to speed. Engine is 1984 which really means budget for replacement. It looks like it has had a lot of water running down the saloon bulkhead. The wiring looks like it needs a complete rewire. Sails are old.
I think you could spend 20k without veing at the end of it.

To be honest 20k would not be enough. My Fulmar has cost over 30k to get to her excellent condition, and that was doing all the work myself and no replacement engine! I have advised plenty of Fulmar owners on what they can do economically and what must be done. If this is an ex Westerly Sailing boat then it would have had a hard life. Quite a number required major repairs after sailing accidents. Also check the gel coat for surface crazing as this is almost impossible to correct, but the gel coat does get UV discolouration that can be removed. Look in my signature for some useful links.

Absolutely. I am doing a major refit on my contessa and the only way it makes sense financially has been to completely ignore the cost and not count anything up.

A Contessa 26 - 10k will buy you a pretty good one. Not much room below but marginally better than a tent. Fantastic sea boat with good manners and the ability to get you off a lee shore. Quick, safe, very wet and loads of fun!

The boat market is horribly depressed currently, but there's a slim chance a Co26 will slowly increase in time if well looked after.

The OP said in post #1 - "for a family of 4".
An old narrow 26 foot Contessa with tiny interior would put the family off for ever.
About a quarter the interior space of a Fulmar, and the latter would also feel much safer/drier for the family.

Someone I met during my round Britain trip had just sold his motorboat. He thought he would buy a Co26. I suggested he visit my Fulmar as he is about 6ft 3in. OK, he could nearly stand up in my boat and could not believe how roomy it was compared to his memory of sailing a Co26 many years earlier. I tried hard to help him find a very good Fulmar, but failed. He ended up buying a Westerly Falcon as it was available in very good condition and he could stand upright in it. I have helped him with a lot of advice since purchase and shall be meeting up with him in August.

The Co26 is not suitable for the OP in my opinion.

It’s a 👎from me. Too old hat, too difficult to sail unless they are 4 keen, hard men who don’t mind getting wet, too small inside and too slow. That Fulmar looks amazing, compared to the C26. Coming from someone who cut his cruising teeth in a Dragonfly 800, even smaller inside than the Contessa. But it did have a huge cockpit tent and vast deck space, and a sensible rig.

Decent looking Konsort here (no connection, just popped up in one of my searches). Headlining a bit saggy and could do with some new instruments, but looks fundamentally good inside and out if the pictures bear any resemblance to the current reality.
Looks good but i still dkn't get why they say "new engine. Installed in 2017"

That's a 10 year old engine.
