I wonder if anyone can help!!
I have recently matched up a BMW D190 straight six with a Bravo3 sterndrive.
I feel the gearbox shaft has located into the engine ok but when I look down from the top of the engine I still see part of the shaft and the engineered ribs of the shaft, giving the impression the shaft has not gone in all the way.
Is this ok or do I need a longer shaft as the gearbox is sitting true and everything seems to be working ok.

When you say 'gearbox shaft' you mean the BIII drive shaft?
This splinned shaft goes into a coupler that takes quite a load; especially when connected to diesels - most use the steel coupler rather than the basic alloy one used by the mid range petrols (5/5.7 units).
I would have thought (ie don't know for certain) that the less shaft in contact with the coupler the more likeleyhood of problems in this area. It is a 50hr maintaince item for greasing which highlights it's importance in the powertrain.
I would involve a professional opinion on your particular set up.
