I'm going to make another offer on a boat next week.

Although high spec (?) , there is no B/Thruster which I need/want.

How much is and how much to retrofit a 4 hp Bow Thruster to a Superhawk 48 ? Figures required to work out my offer. Sunseeker Option from new is £4877 + vat --

Thanks

...I wanna boat please..

Byron and Easy Options retro fit

Clive

Thanks (?) for filling me with hope. I don't propose doing myself, I would use pros, surely they would be better>

I've read Byron's views on Bowthrusters before , but if he knew my berth he might have a little compassion. IN ANY CASE , he knows that I'm a total incompetent so he may approve on the basis that if I have one I won't hit quite as many people while attempting to berth my pride and joy.

Stern To, NO foward clearance and open to SWesterly Beam To, anyone he appears to be out tying down the estate valuables this evening. Unless the Launch broke down.

DIY job, around £2K. Get a yard to do it, well depends whether they really want the job or not. If they don't want to do it, probably quote you £7Kish, if they do, about £4K.

Definitely a straightforward DIY job. Not difficult, just time consuming, but then what else you got to do over Christmas?

I dont particularly share Byrons views on BT's probably cos I've got one and a think
they are very worth while. Not Byrons fault hes from an earlier time when real men did'nt
use such toys. Mind you I wonder if he'll ever buy a car again which is'nt an auto
and does'nthave power steering or central locking or air conditioning, I know I would'nt

Ouch...Thanks.

Prior to that I had assumed I was looking at c. £2500k if Sunseeker did £6k from new. Looks like a 'You will do this prior to sale' item then.

Options over Xmas?

1) Drink
2) Avoiding in-laws
3) Drink

...and anyway boat doesn't get part-xd until Jan....

Don't know what a superhawk 48 is, but from recent looking at bowthruster blurb, 4hp seems v.small for a 48'.

Vetus 4hp costs about £1200 inc vat, tunnel,2 controls, control cables etc . They suggest a 108AH battery for 12V (extra £120from them) + batt.cables, isolator switch & fitting,of course. All full retail prices

I own the rights to a 'berth' in La Rague on the Cote D'Azur which is currently rented out. Makes me probably the only amateur currently making money out of boats around here I guess.

Just want to get it done !!

Re: Byron and Easy Options retro fit

Anti-progress Lancastrians who with the French nearly took this country out......

Possibly hlb and Byron are descendants ? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I quote

'Luddites were men who took the name of a (perhaps) mythical individual, Ned Ludd who was reputed to live in Sherwood Forest. The Luddites were trying to save their livelihoods by smashing industrial machines developed for use in the textile industries of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. Some Luddites were active in Lancashire also. They smashed stocking-frames and cropping frames among others. There does not seem to have been any political motivation behind the Luddite riots; equally, there was no national organisation. The men merely were attacking what they saw as the reason for the decline in their livelihoods.

However, early outbreaks of Luddism occurred during the French Wars and were seen by the government as clear evidence of disaffection. In 1812 the government probably had reason to be fearful:

a large part of the army was overseas, mainly in the Peninsular with Wellington;
the country was fighting not only the French but also the Americans
England was experiencing the worst trade depression since the 1760s and people were suffering great hardship. as evidenced by the Sheffield riots of 1812
The only person who seems to have appreciated the problems faced by ordinary people was the Earl Fitzwilliam, Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. He said, 'outrage and conspiracy ... are the offspring of distress and want of employment ... fostered and rendered formidable by nothing but the want of trade'

Andy

Thanks very much for the info.

Superhawk 48 is/was made by Sunseeker a very narrow/light day boat despite its length. HENCE THE LOW HP REQUIREMENT.

Thanks Again

So, folks, it looks as if labour for the job is around £4000 - £5000 .....bit heavy what??

A bow thruster is as useful as a chocolate teapot if it aint powerful enough to move the bow sideways in a strong beam wind. Boat builders typically skimp on the bowthruster spec to save a few pennies so the original fit item tends to be underpowered. For me, 4hp isnt enough for a 48' boat, even a slinky one like the Superhawk 48. The extra cost of buying a a more powerful thruster is not huge compared to the total cost. Reccomend you get copies of the Vetus or Sleipner catalogues and calculate required thruster force for yourself. It'll probably come out around 75kgm force/ about 7hp
Job should cost £4000 - 4500
