Hello,

I'm looking for a mounting bracket for a Bosun/Sowester Compass like the one in this photo.

I inherited this compass from my Dad who has long since sold the boat we used the compass on. If anyone has one they no longer use please let me know.

I may well have one sitting on the boat. I say 'may' since I have been clearing up and throwing out bits n pieces. I will check when next down there, probably Saturday.

I always thought that grid compasses were the work of the devil but I can just about imagine that you might fit one on the binnacle of a Mystere. I think that we had a bulkhead compass on my Mystere, which I sailed from '74 to '87, though the binnacle would have been better.

I found the piece on the bookshelf in my study - so go explain.

Measurements are 64 x 34 mm and 13 mm thick at the sides and 4 mm in the middle. Slot width 37 mm at top and 31 mm at bottom inside and 33 mm and 26 mm respectively for the outside.

If you want it PM your address and its in the post.

Got your address. Packed in envelope and found two first class stamps in my wallet; the Queen blinked. Stuck them on the envelope and went to the post box. Just before posting I noticed no stamps. Eventually found the stamps and returned home. Now 'prit sticked' and will sends tomorrow (Friday) my apologies.

I'm intrigued!

I had a Bosun grid compass on my Corribee, back in the early 80's.

I loved it: found it really easy to steer a compass course with.
I have to admit that I've scarcely used one, but I seem to read them 180 degrees wrong. It's a matter of what you are used to I suppose.

I used to just get onto my course to steer, using the compass the same as any other steering compass, then spend a second setting the grid.

Couldn't be much easier, and I didn't have to sell my soul to the devil.

Thinking about it now, I rather miss it.

Perhaps you don't have the gimbals set the right way. I use a Bosun and find it very easy to use esp as you just have to line the pointer up with the grid once the bezel is set to the required course.

I have a mounting bracket at the front of the cockpit ... and another, with illumination above it, under the tiller at the back of the cockpit.
