Bosal detachable towbar

About 8 years ago I had a Bosal towbar fitted, I believe a AK6, to my Passat estate. Now I want to tow my dinghy home, I've got the towbar out (we had left off, it has never been used) but we can't find the key. Is the key for security reasons only, or does it have to be used to put the towbar on?

I have one of those, the lock rusted solid, I drilled it out without an issue. It's still secure for towing but could be taken off and stolen if someone wanted to.
