Does anybody know how to stop the prop turning when sailing, with a borg warner velvet drive gearbox? Without the rope/spanner trick. I've never managed, maybe I'm doing something wrong?

You wrap a rope around the shaft and tie it off, like a spanish windlass, or you put a spanner on one of the drive nuts and allow it to come into contact with the engine bearer, thus stopping the shaft. Couldn't make the Sbad do, had to go to work, emergency like, still here!! All the other guys are in the middle east!

When anch in strong streams etc I use a rope with a loop, tie one end to something firm, put loop over coupling nut, allow shaft to wind up, job done.

Never used it under way though, nor motored of with still on , YET!!!!

Thats the trick I was talking about, but a pain to do on mine. I was thinking about motorsailing on one engine. I have a crossover tap in my sterngland water feed, but it's just a pain to mess with each time, I thought you amy be able to stop the engine in gear or something and it would stop the prop, never tried that, but thought somebody might know.

you need a shaft brake, then, as stopping in gear doesnt work, oil pressure to control the box is driven from a concentric pump on the input shaft.
stop the pump & the applied pressure on the plates or bands is lost, so you get neutral.
