Boom Tent left over winter?

You wouldn't want to sit under it in the rain though like Zagato is proposing.

Why not, does it leak  Canvas is very good at keeping heat in and water out if looked after.

Boom "bimini covers" and cockpit tents are really handy for keeping the drafts out and the sun and rain off you. They are vital bit of kit enabling you to live aboard an open boat or to extend the sleeping capacity :D.

We have had some great parties cramming in groups into small trailer sailors under simple canvas covers of various designs to tents with standing room  The trick is to get the design right - mooring hooks usually play an obvious Heath Robinson role.

My Drascombe has a clever design where you pull up two of the floor boards to widen the cockpit seats for sleeping on under canvas, works very well :D

Blimey C, next you're going to tell us there's a basement and wine cellar with a connection to the London underground ! :)

Agreed even a simple boom tent is extremely handy in the right circumstances.

Not particularly, but the space under it is dingy, gloomy, always damp because of the rain in the cockpit before you put the tent up, and hung about with wet oilies and undone washing-up.

When the alternative is an open boat without any cover, then sure a boom tent seems very attractive. But when you have at your disposal a cabin with headroom, lights, a stove and oil lamp, two comfy sofas, a modest bookcase and a drinks cabinet, why would you choose to spend a rainy evening demonstrating your stiff upper lip under canvas?

My boom tent is very useful, but it's useful as porch and utility room, not sitting room.

Well I'm happy to say my sailing boat doesn't have and doesn't need to expend the energy to carry around that sort of junk, I go out just to leave that stuff at home !

She is quite comfy and has a bookshelf, I'm not limited to reading the almanac at anchorages just yet.

The boom tent does still make a 'porch and utility room', but unlike a chum at my club with a 31' boat I haven't got a plumbed in dishwasher !

Comes down to different uses then ;)

A party group under canvas, a load more in the cabin with beer on tap coming from the sink tap - great fun! Although big hangover the next day.

Or watching the sun go down one rainy evening with a glass of wine - great, no stiff upper lips involved!

"You wouldn't want to sit under it in the rain though like Zagato is proposing - go in the cabin, that's what it's for" ........So not always.
