The books say Bologne is not a nice place for boats to moor/visit - we are planning a possible trip in two weeks time - is this correct and where are the best places/marinas to stay for a couple of days?(2 x 28' keel boats)

Boulogne is a good harbour in any wind except strong NW. The large outer harbour gives you time to sort yourself out, get sails down and ship fenders. The marina is at the head of the avant port (straight in to port - not off to starboard where the commercial docks are). Friendly marina staff and excellent showers and other facilities plus bar (all new). It's cheap , too. I was in there earlier this month in a Contessa 32 - £9 a night. Much of the architecture adjacent to the port is a legacy of the RAF, but further up in the town its centuries-old charm still exists. The Hotel Hamiot is the nearest brasserie - try the skate in black butter - formidable. On big tides beware the walkway to the dockside at low water it is very steep. Also at low water the harbour is odiferous. But all in all a good first foreign port of call from Ramsgate/Dover. Enter at any state of tide.

Boulogne rather than Bologna? For up to date information see THIS POSTING from a visit six weeks ago.

The odiferous water (see Dick Durham's posting) seems now to be a thing of the past, thanks to a new sewage plant. However, the tidal harbour is crowded at this time of year, specially at weekends.

I haven't been there since Evadne was berthed at Rye, which is more decades ago than I like to admit. It's good to hear they've diverted the sewage, the steps/walkway used to be a real nightmare at LWS, you never knew what you were treading on in the last five metres.
The old town was always nice, and well worth the short walk. The food and the welcome were always good.

There used to be some sort of religious parade in the early summer, (pardon my ignorance in such matters) where a statue of the virgin Mary or the local saint is taken out to bless the local fishing grounds. Well worth catching that if you can find out the date.

cheap to eat out and much nicer than Calais

Bologne has been bit quiet since ferries packed up going there a few years ago, howver a new ferry service has just started uphttp://www.speedferries.co.uk.Can def recommend to old part of town at top of hill, esp the tiny little Bon Aquiel ? on corner at top of high street.Around the old city wall is very pleasant evening walk and you can speend hours looking at the lumps and chunks knocked out the the buildings caused by gunfire. On that subject there is a bronze
(man on horse?) statue on the seafront riddled with bullet holes.

the "old fish dock" stbd hand proir to outer marina would be the best bet as the outer is very noisey ( due to in-conciderate fishermen @ 03.00 hrs) + short finger pontoons.
i havnt actually been into the old fisher dock but understand it to be better.
the main entrance is very accessible @ all states & i dont concider it to be a problem from whatever direction of wind
have fun!.

To be reccomended... Spent a very pleasant 4 day's there last year, facilities extremly good, uprated last spring, couple of good wineries, v. good restuarents, and if youv'e got the children with you, the Aquarium is stunning... Locked in to the new marina..on S/H of the old one. The Odour de Boulogne was significantly less than previous visits. Have a good trip. Tony W.
