Boats above Ryepeck Moorings moved on and a interesting night

I have said it before and I will say it again, IF these boaters have the correct licenses etc then leave them alone,OR is it that they do not have the floating "gin palace" that you like the look of,people think boating is snobby anyway so dont make it worse

What they do not have is permission to park there. If they were prepared to pay the going rate on an authorised mooring, complaints about the look of the boats should be ignored.
What is proving difficult is finding mooring spaces for everyone that needs them.
Suspect a bit of NIMBY among riverside property owners with the ear of local councillors at the golf club may have something to do with it..
Did hear Rolf Harris may not need his riverside garden for bit !

Some further research brought up this from Spelthorne Conservatives website.

'Council set to tackle unauthorised boat mooring
Spelthorne Council is stepping up enforcement action to tackle the problems created by boats mooring on the Thames in certain parts of the Borough.
Residents of Ryepeck Meadow and Council owned land near the Red Lion pub in Shepperton have been battling problems caused by boat owners mooring and discharging waste from their boats.
Cost-effective and timely enforcement of unauthorised moorings on the Thames is an issue which the River Thames Alliance and Environment Agency have been grappling with for some time and earlier in the year the Environment Agency completed a six month pilot scheme using specialised contractors to enforce mooring restrictions in Elmbridge and Oxford.
Following the success of this pilot, Spelthorne Council will be the first local authority to take up this new innovative enforcement method. Signage is being introduced to warn boat owners of the mooring restrictions and, following warnings; enforcement action will be taken against those who ignore the conditions.

And this from the New River Thames Alliance website

District Enforcement working for Spelthorne BC at their moorings at Ryepeck Moorings announce an initial success with fifteen illegally moored boats moved on!
After two weeks of warnings, the 15+ vessels all departed by the first day of charging (27th June) restoring the site back to the owner’s intended use.
It’s another fantastic example of how effective civil legislation solution can be for landowners.'

but problem has surely only moved elsewhere, they need some proper moorings.

"Somebody" is going to have to grasp this nettle and like traveller sites, find a location for them to moor.
It will be something new to add to the NIMBY list.

NIMBY :D

The floating village of Teddington lock seems to have grown in the past couple of weeks, all authorities concerned have done such a sterling job of putting a lid on it over the years, word of its popularity has spread. Almost all the useable riverbank is now taken between the lock and Kingston and the overspill has occupied land owned by the sea scouts which clearly says no mooring. Nice.

30 miles from Oldgit Towers which does extend ones backyard a jot.
Local authorities really need to provide somewhere for them to moor legally so they do not have moor elsewhere. Simples ?
The councils will however need to grow a pair and ignore the NIMBYS in order to solve the problem .
If you push the problem into the next parish sooner or later the NIMBYS there are going to dump it right back the lap of the NIMBYS who so gleefully dumped it in theirs ? :)

But if you provide them all somewhere to moor legally it means they'll have to pay their way and they don't want too

As joejo said....on the 1st day of charging 15+ boats left:)

Yes but suspect many of them would if offered the chance ?
And how much would it cost to remain ? No wonder they all up sticks and departed.Basically the locals did not want them at any price.

So No pikies then ..
How about Incinerators......From the same website

"Another contentious issue is heaving into view. See the attached cuttings from Colnbrook Views and Get Surrey. That parcel of land, proposed as the site of another incinerator in Spelthorne, is also most definitely Green Belt. Maybe not the most pristine Green Belt, but Green Belt nevertheless, and definitely more beautiful without an incinerator on it."
See Document 52
How about a few desperately needed houses then. No chance http://www.losra.org/keep-kempton-green

Righto .... so what IS preventing some enterprising landowner from providing some legitimate long term mooring on the Thames ????

That's a job for the councils, but when their dealings with some river users amount to complaints of squatting and rubbish, what's the chance of them creating more long or even short term moorings for the benefit of the rest of us? The few are going to bugger it up for the majority.

No shortage of marina berths, but that goes against the Freegan lifestyle. When did living on a boat become a right?

Councils, especially South Oxfordshire, have apoplexy if you even mention the word moorings let alone live aboard moorings.
I see all the moaning and groaning about St Kats. Does no one remember how they were forced to say bye-bye to about 30 boats because Tower Hamlets found out they were live-aboards. Many of these fled to South Dock which had not long opened.

There is only one certainty in this whole sorry saga.whilst politicians of every ilk are happy with the population heading towards 70m,all mostly wanting to settle in the south east, this problem is only going to get worse.
Good job we have joined up thinking from all the government departments:(

there are loads of boats on the thames with no licence, a lot are owned by people that can easily afford to pay but don't.

some of the royal regattas workboats seem to be running a year behind on the licence

Are you sure?

John G

Yes there are available berths, but they cost money and I can't see any of the boats in question moving from gratis to £1000's pa if offered by MDL or anyone else. They're there because it's free and they can get away with it.
5 to 7 years worth of mooring fees for some, others even longer. 15 to 30k saved each? Worth the hassle of the odd letter sellotaped to your boat, or visiting official to laugh at.

I spotted a couple of old licences on regatta boats on Sunday. One safety boat at Hampton court with a 2013 and another being lifted out of the water at Molesey boat club with a 2010. Poor show.

Utterly disgraceful....
What folks forget / ignore is that it costs EA a lorra, lorra money to prosecute offenders - so they have to rely on coercion. Gone are the days when peeps have any conscience. 'Tis a matter of what you can get away with.

Poor (???) blurry EA are on a hiding to nothing - send out a patrol with H&S rules costs money just to bang a ticket on a vessel - which most likely be ignored. Even more difficult if said vessel is tucked up ashore.

Some Social Conscience is needed.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.......
