Boat unresponsive in astern

Apart from looking at them every winter there is no maintenance that can be done on control cables. My gear cable is the same age as the engine (20 years), the throttle cable could be the same age as the boat (47 years). Do I wait for one or other to break, do I just carry spares or do I replace them this coming winter?

That's an easy one - now you've thought about it it'll pray on your mind until you do it. That's how that sort of thing works for me anyway 🤷‍♂️

Check them over for signs of the outer cover splitting and if the controls started to feel stiff / clunky.

I had my Gear Change cable do same recently .... had to lift the cockpit sole and move gear lever on the gearbox with a piece of wood ...

All was fine until boat lifted in to return home !! Started engine and then nothing FWD or ASTERN !

New morse cable fitted ... all good now.
