Italian (and Greek for that matter) Road Transport of boats is almost impossible and 95% of haulage cos wont go in. Far to much paperwork restrictions and levies to make it profitable or practicle.
I would suggest a ship to north coast of Africa or take her yourself - it would be a nice trip (just check engines and the like are in tip top condition first /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
In fact, since I have no boat for a month or so, a route like this would be jolly nice:
St Tropez to Bastia, Corsica: 126nm
Bastia to Civitavecchia, Italy: 111nm
Civitavecchia to Naples: 147nm
Naples to Messina (with stopover): 175nm
Messina to Siracusa: 70nm
Siracusa to Malta Grand Harbour: 80nm
Reckon that is easily do-able in 10 day and would be a lovely trip. Why not try it, just make sure the boat is fully serviced first.
I would broadly agree. It's a lovely trip, but I took about a month over it (taking a leisurely cruise) in a faster (I am guessing) boat.
Suggest going to Portoferraio (Elba) rather than Bastia. Not much difference in distance, you can keep away from Cap Corse if the weather is bad, and it's a short hop to the Italian mainland.
I found plenty of stopping places en-route.
If you can take your time, try island hopping down the Pontine and Aeolian islands to Sicily. They are beautiful. Plenty of shelter and anchorages.
There is a fishing port, Porto Palo, right at the south-eastern corner of Sicily. It's OK to anchor and it's then a short 60 mile hop to Valetta.
As an quick alternative, I have also done Trapani (Sicily) to Nice in 5 days via Sardinia and Corsica.
Route: Nice, Calvi, Bonifacio, Porto Cervo, Cagliari, Trapani, Porto Palo, Valetta. You do have one long stretch of open water of about 170 miles from Calgliari to Trapani.
thanks to both of you. much appreciated info. wife can't believe i've received replies. doesn't quite understand the boating fraternity yet. another option i'm exploring is taking boat to catania on a big ship from southampton and then its a quick hop down to malta from there. the boats engines are quite old, tho reliable, but a trip down from st tropez is about 2 seasons worth in scotland.
