What would you expect to pay for a Boat survey (excluding engines) on a Superhawk 48?

Is it a function of purchase cost?

Qualified YBDSA member who will take his mate with him.

I have a quote this morning so just checking with the experts here.

Thanks

IMHO you get what you pay for. It's a bit like a house survey, you can have the all singing all dancing full survey to the basic structual and valuation. The more you pay the more you get to read and the bigger the list of reasons not to buy. But as a rough rule of thumb

LOA(M) x #pages x 12 = cost (£)

So for a five page survey on a 48' boat I'd guess around £872

Its a small price to pay for peace of mind, you must be paying well over 100k for that boat, if you find after you've bought it that there is a serious structual problem you may find yourself with a boat worth just about nothing. I'd say get the engines looked at by an engineer too as these are the expensive bits if they go wrong, also if you do buy the boat perhaps have the engines fully serviced so you know it's been done even if they say 'Oh they where serviced last month'. Again peace of mind. It's an investment so you have to be careful.

Thanks very much for the confirmation.

The quoteis actually €1100 plus TVA, so somewhere around £825. This excludes the engines and I'm still awaiting a quote on that. I'm also happy the guy is independentand is British qualified.

I have no intention of proceeding without this survey being done, but the vendor istrying to put completion pressure on.... he can go whistle if that's his attitude.

Hmm. You should get your man down asap if you want the boat. Otherwise you may find that you spend the survey money and the guy decides to sell to someone else (or nobody) just to say "stuff you". Or, unless you are a bit nice, he could change the price - i did this with a car after a guy had made an offer, had a RAC survey and the survey showed the tyres were fine, but the guy tried to drop the price so I put it up! teehee! So he took fright and bought at the agreed price. Some people with boats are complete gits, you know.

If you are dead nice to him may agree to go out with you to show you around, and give you spare bits out of his garage and so on which is worthwhile, and find the spare keys and so on. Whereas if you are a bit giitish he'll take all the sellable junk like lifejackets, and spare rope and so on that costs a bomb to replace and go for a burn to use up the diesel.

It's all getting a little bit weird.

Story, for those who haven't followed assorted drivel, is that 4 weeks ago TB and I visit umpteenth Superhawk 48 in Monaco. Clearly this one is right but a little busy etc. Make offer 3 weeks ago, with commitment to go for 'sea trial' before it comes out of water 2 weeks Last Saturday.
On day before trial , agent phones; Vendor considered your offer and now decided that he's going to keep boat as toy despite having bought Manahattan 48 (Yawn, Yawn).

Never Mind..annoyed but keep looking. Knee goes in plaster on the Monday due p****D on different boat.

Last Tuesday e-mail from agent..if you want to make a Serious offer, vendor may consider...reply was serious last time BUT in for a penny. Up offer by a bit.

Friday am (?) , answer back yes ...but I've had to go from 10 to 7 % commission if you pay me 1/2 of difference says MC - based eyetie broker 'I've agreed with vendor OK'.

I reply immediately ... Commission is issue between you and vendor BUT if you do a) Delivery b) Commissioning c) Overview Outstanding work completed ...at end I pay you directly €x'000 ( thinking I'll get him on my side).

Nothing heard till 1800 hrs yesterday...pasted copy of vendor's e-mail..'If this guy wants boat etc. now he's going to have to pay berthing etc....as of today , either that or its going on the Hard....etc..' Despite my efforts I don't know who vendor is of course. Mrs L went through drawers etc.. but no name/adress

Meanwhile I have lined-up surveyor ( Thanks again to the Forum ) .... but haven't REALLY got go ahead.

So situation is I think I have a deal BUT Agent has gone to ground (mobile switched off) following e-mail this morning saying he's going to find out price of berth??? .......???

..and all I wanted was a Jeanneau 37 Thunderclap Flybridge with self-furling mainsail..????

Bottom line is Venor and Purchaser totally hacked off POSSIBLY due to deviant go between...

Re: Whistler\'s Confucius

So if I understand this correctly the owner of Superhawk has bought himself a Manhattan 48 and is not sure if he wants to keep Superhawk as a toy (flash git). Then 3 days later (one Sunday) he says that he will reconsider toy if you offer more money. You do as you are told and make a better offer, broker then says you are robbing him blind and he has kids to feed etc. You rightly tell him to bugger off unless he can give you something in return. All of a sudden the owner (mister I've got sh*t loads of money and can afford two boats at my whim) wants you to keep his toy in the water or it's going on hard standing presumably to save some money ?? Well it isn't going to be much of a toy if it isn't on the water now is it.

This doesn't ring true, either.
1, If the owner has loads of money and can afford an extra toy he would want to keep it in the water, so perhaps the broker is trying to pressure you.
2, The owner can't afford two boats and he needs to get shut now, so the broker is trying to pressure you under instruction from the owner.

Either way how many buyers do you think there are out there for a Superhawk 48, how many will buy before they've had a sea trial and it'll be much harder to shift if he puts it on the hard standing. I'd call their bluff and I bet they call you back.

Wager Accepted

... 'Purchased' = contractually committed.

Prize is as much of what you like, where you like, when you like,

Sounds like a win-win wagerto me anyway /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Whistler\'s Confucius

I think the broker has a bigger part to play in this than he is making out. Th eowner doesn't own his own mooring, hence the requirement to go on the hard , it has been moved between berths a number of times already ...

Suspectthe Owner really wants to sell but brokerhas not communicated facts , promptly and 'bulled' it all up.

IF the boat is good ..it's a good price..

Definiton of \"owning boat/drink\"

no, if you have already purchased, the contract has been executed. It's a real boat and it's under your control. The loot paid is under the control of the previous owner. Like frexample, if i bought a drink, then i'd have the drink on this side of the bar, and the bartender would have the money and have given me any change. Buying a drink *isn't* sating that you'll go to the pub, or arrranging to meet at pub or even asking bartender for drink.

Re-Definiton of \"owning boat/drink\"

So how about 'Non refundable deposit of at least 5% being paid'.....??

You know i'm too skint to lose that much... there is method in my madness which I will explain when you accept the terms.......

Terms of wager

Contractually committed means committed to whatever the contract says you're committed to, which might not be committed to buy a boat. You could be committed to buy the boat if survey reveals no material problems frexample, but until the survey reports well, you are not committed to buy the boat. More ludicrously, you could be committed to buy a boat in the year 3000AD. So, it needs to be "Learner actually owns boat before Christmas". All entirely imho, you can do wot u like! :)

Re: No!

Secondhand boats are either sold or not sold. A deposit means nothing cos who pays the mooring? And who insures the thing? The owner. Not the deposity- promising nonreturnable ooh could you make it 5% refundable oh go on then 2% non-returnable provided erm you put a mast on it, saw it off, turn it into a cranchi, take it to sardinia, no wait majorca erm and since he's accepted the offer then i must be paying too much so oh...

Ok ! OK ! Gang Warfare

They're hunting in pairs today.

I concede ... this battle isn't worth winning.. I get drunk anyway....

What I was trying to cover was my backup option which is a boat in Egypt( Yes Egypt) which isn't here/France until January but which I intend to secure as previously mentioned. I was keepingthat to myself to avoid the claim 'Oi Flash Git'

Howver as we are into the pedantry of English Contract Law I humbly concede the point.... you're still going to end up paying ..

..and what if I'd ended up taking out French leasing, I would still be liable for mooring etc. but would not 'own' the boat...

P.S. I resemble that post !!

Pharline or Sunseikher?

Ooh yes, there's lots of med style boats there, but make sure that you inspect the hulls carefully: the hieraglyphics along the sides could be signs of Osiris.

Justreceived e-mail ...unbelievable..

This is a copy and paste ofpart of it :----

'I asked the port for the price of the berth on a monthly basis (winter rate) & the answer was 870 €.

I think that if you agree to pay that & are willing to sign a Memorandum Of Agreement between yourself & the owner, which will give you all the time you need to organize everything, without the owner worying about how long it will take to conclude the sale, we may have eliminated all the obstacles. '

More here than meets the eye.

ok then, Christmas 2003...

If you've found a price that is just above (or it seems, exactly at) the vendors eff-off point, he's counting the pennies: cheaper for him to stick it on the hard, but you say your surveyors are on the way, and yerd have to pay for the boat to be taken off and tested and put back AND you'd have to give notice for a renter in la rague anyway, so not much of your moeny is wasted really anyway? When does the surveyor go round?
