Boat Stuck on Chertsey Bridge - Sat PM

[Two people were on board the boat at the time. It is thought it was too wide to navigate the arches.]

too higher & wide superstructure by the look of it.
she is a very handsome ship indeed
swollen rivers are much more hazardous than being at sea

What a beautiful boat and what a horrible picture. I want to say 'idiots' but perhaps there was a good reason why they felt it necessary to take on the flooded river today.

Exactly what I was thinking but it has to be an almost life or death reason!

Given the speed of the stream and also the water height differential between the upstream and downstream ends of the arch is about 8 inches, the margin for error would be err.... zero!

stuck boat now free

The boat was pulled free by a boat from Bates and despite the alarming picture there was only superficial damage to the wheelhouse and coach-roof.
The vessel was on trade plates indicating a delivery.
All the emergency services were in attendance but in reality did nothing to contribute to the successful conclusion. Full marks to the crew of the Bates boat who did all the hard work and a gold start for "Muggins" which also turned up. Once the bow was pulled off the bridge pier the cruiser was able to power against the flow and make headway to the lock.
It looked like the boat was three-quarters of the way through the bridge when the current swung it round, as someone said, very little room for error.
A little over-the-top though to close Chertsey bridge. It will take more than a few chips out of the stone work to shift that particular danger to navigation.

Pulling it off ....

Not my picture , from a friends Facebook stream ....

Yey! Sportsboat to the rescue.

Out of genuine interest, would it be best to pull using a bridle between the two rear cleats or would it be best to use the Water Ski eye. The cleats are designed for mooring the boat whilst the water Ski eye is designed to pull fat Americans up onto water skis?
