Boat sinks in Jersey

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

They did say the buoy had already been hit before and there was no light. Not sure though how much more damage was done

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

I was out the other day in. F 6 daylight on the nose strong wind we had the covers on and the whole front end screen n all constantly blasted with water ( spray ) , Big waves say 3 M or more boat pitching a lot .
Vis wise due to the pitching , spray and the general darkness ( even in the day ) black clouds etc i slowed right down to 20 knots
Do you mean with your Itama? And you slowed down to 20kts?
You'd better not tell that to Nautical, or he'll ban you from doing that again with anything else than a LRMY... :D :p

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

One of the newspapers said they might just make it 'safe' & leave it there.

Would make a great dive site!

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

Is there much point doing anything else?

Recovering oil and fuel?

Interesting to note the comments on running at speed in the dark. When on out Playtime in the dark I used to run at 14 knots, just on the plane. Incredible to think sailing boats race round oceans through the nights at 20 knots plus these days.

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

I assumed “making it safe” would involve removing contamination sources.

Best not discuss the speeds I used to come home across the Solent at in a rib at night!

I am sure I heard David Attenborough say on the last episode of Blue Planet that on average three shipping containers are lost each day overboard. Imagine hitting something solid like that at speed in the dark :ambivalence:

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

I’m sure I heard a guy got a big rib and made a living going out after storms and dragging them back in. Maybe you get rubber ducks.....maybe 10 million cigarettes in shrink wrap!

Imagine hitting something solid like that at speed in the light! I'd imagine there isn't much above the surface - mix in a few waves...

The buoy?

If that was the buoy and they missed seeing it on radar at 20 knots and ploughed into it, maybe everyone should just be thankful it wasn't someone in a small boat instead of a buoy...

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

I wonder if it’s a stock boat , demo shipped by Ventura to the CI ,s ? Carted around from from one market to another .
Hence the Boat showy name .
Handy re VAT and cash flow to reg it in the CI .

Although the released info mentions “owners “ - - I do hope the guys who took it out and stuffed it into a buoy have watertight ( scuse the pun ) insurance .Ie the ins Co have not got any ammo to cock off

Reason I raise this is all this talk from the HM ,s office of leaving it on the sea bed .
Most decent policy’s have pretty good verging on generous salvage provisions.
It does not feel deep ( happy to be corrected by diver ?) for a few divers to get an air bag or two in .
Another thing that’s not adding up in my book is the eco side of things ,

Fart anywhere in the EEA ,and the environmental police jump on you ( that’s a metaphor JRudge:))
Those tanks will leak obviously , so hence the recovery of the perceived nasty stuff , but why not place a few bags and arrange a suitable surface vessel to cart if off once lifted ?? If you have divers on it anyhow ?

The eco side may be funded by somebody else not the “ owners “ ins Co —- so just do there bit only ?

It will all come out in the wash ,

But so far on top of the initial smacking it into a lit buoy ,we now have Q,s over what’s happening next ?

There’s something not adding up about the whole thing

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

Has this not happened before with uk boat and the delivery crew ended up bankrupt do to no insurance?

Yes, I remember this. If I recall correctly, they were delivering a Fairline, ran into a buoy and sank it. There was a big question mark over the insurance (seem to recall they weren't covered for commercial work so maybe the boat's insurance company went after them claiming they were careless). Seem to recall the skipper lost his house over it, and his mate, who'd come along and was getting a nominal £50 and a ride on a nice boat, also was sued for many thousands.

Horrific really, I'm sure lots of people have moved boats for small amounts mostly for the fun or experience, with no idea that they were potentially exposing themselves to hundreds of thousands of pounds of liability.

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

I did wonder about the news report saying that it was unsafe for commercial shipping, I wouldn't imagine a steel commercial ship would even notice a pile of grp in the shape of a Pershing flybridge.

Re: Pershing 62 sinks

I guess this is the buoy that she ran into.

This picture is on the front page.

Just curious, if a radar can see this kind of object which has only a few inches above water?
