Boat Show 2025

I think there are similarities! People who are looking to spend house/boat type money typically aren’t wandering aimlessly and just writing cheques on a whim - so the most serious actual buyers will usually make appointments so they can be sure to get a proper look/discussion.

Not attending but did consider it , and if I had or if I go to a different boat show it will be with a view to researching buying a boat , not now but when i retire in approximately 5 years

Does this make me a "serious actual buyer" ? or would i not pas your "sniff" test ...because if i didn't i wouldn't be back in 5 years time

It must be rather wearing for boat manufacturers exhibiting their products. On the other hand, us punters. have paid a chunky entrance fee and probably feel entitled to see what they want. Often , gaining ideas for their own boats or sometimes appreciating what they already have.

I remember when the Macregor 26 was first shown at I think Southampton boat show. There was almost a non stop queue and the poor sales people had to face this for 10 days.

When I worked for the show, the number of stories we'd hear about "random punters" turning up at multi million pound boats and paying the deposit on the spot was eye watering.
I heard a story (I presume it is true?) years ago about a scruffy gentleman wandering on to the Sunseeker stand clutching a large bag. He made a beeline for a particular large yacht and said "I will have it please".
And he then promptly paid the deposit with the cash that filled the bag.
I guess that money laundering regulations would not allow this to happen nowadays?

I’m sure the buzz of having the most popular boat at the show more thsn compensates.

Years ago at Earl's Court my parents looked at a new snapdragon yacht, possibly a 26 footer. Quite large back then over 50 years ago.
Took our shoes off as good kids, revealing socks with holes. I suspect our trousers were no better !
Salesman was not impressed until my younger brother and sister came back from inspecting the forward vee berth and announced that it was a lot smaller than our existing boat and that it wasn't suitable.
Salesman attitude totally changed. Parents never purchased one as it was well out of their price band / budget.
Existing boat was a plywood job with constant repairs due to rot .....

It’s irrelevant if you pass my sniff test - as I’m not there selling yachts! But I expect if you look close enough to retirement and talk about buying when you retire you’ll get attention. Perhaps not as much attention as the next customer who appears to be in buying mode. Of course, if you haven’t done any research of your own and are talking to someone hired just to man the booth or a sales guy paid on commission you’ll do less well than if you’ve bothered to make an appointment with someone who is vested in future customers not just show sales targets. I don’t know why people get upset about not being treated like real customers if they either aren’t customers or acting like it!

I couldn't disagree with you more. Speaking as a former estate agent, let the hate begin, separating the wheat from the chaff is critical otherwise a 9 hour day is reduced to picking through meaningless emails and phone calls only to discover they were never even close to having the $ to begin with. Granted this comes with experience so when you're new to a sales role you must consider everyone a buyer, but as Colombo once said, "after a while, you get a nose for these sort of things".
Who said we didn't sort the wheat from the chafe - very easy to do whilst still be courteous and letting plenty of people through the boat. Three quick questions to a viewer decided whether I would spend more time on them or move onto the next potential. I was one of 3 salesman and sold the same number of boats as the other two combined. They were generally built to order and could be personalised.

BTW after working in the yachting industry I worked successfully in the family Letting Agency - sold to a Plc in 2004 with 7 offices and 60 staff.

Ah, there's your mistake. The exhibitors have paid a fortune for the privilege of showing you their wares. The only reason they are there is to get sales, now or in the future.

I went today and thought the show was rubbish.
Been going regularly for 20+ years even bought a new boat in 2004 that was when it took all day to get round the show over 3 or 4 compounds with something for everyone. £20 for 2 maybe 3 hours of nothing particularly new in a much smaller area is not good.

Not sure why it seams utterly boring. I still get a buzz when I frequently look at boats on the water wherever I go.

Boatshow is not that different to going to a chandlers and if you don’t have anything to buy or money to waste then it’s game over.
When I was doing my Twister up I’d go in every week and spend a fair bit, but with no varnishing to do and nothing needed, it no fun.

Think it’s time I got a project boat. Good for chandlers and the boatshow not that the realise it.

Milady has decided she wants to go tomorrow, so I have another bout of congested driving ahead of me. Still I've sussed out where the good coffee stops are, and where I can gently tease the j'worths on the Border Force mega-stand.

Oh, and replenish my faltering stock of HMCG biropens...

See you there, can’t wait. 😀
I’m buying either a new prop, self tailing winches or a chart plotter. I’m on a mission!

I filled in the survey after I went on Tuesday and they just sent me two free tickets for the last day, Sunday.

That's one way to increase attendance and I can see the headlines now - "boat show numbers exceeded all records, especially on the final day".

You are confusing the purpose of the organiser (to extract as much cash from everyone possible) and the purpose of the exhibitor (to extract enough cash from actual customers to cover the massive amount they’ve paid the organiser!). The only person who comes away from a modern boat show saying “that was definitely worthwhile, let’s do it again next year” is the organizer! Attendees often seem to grumble and exhibitors all go away and count up how much each lead cost before someone next year says “it’s important to be seen to be at the show, otherwise people would think we are struggling!”.
