Just spoke to Yacht Shipping. Turns out there is VAT on the Palma delivery but no VAT to Gibraltar. With this in mind I could pick her up at Gib, Princess will let me stay in Banus for a day or so, then hop up the coast to Palma. No Biscay to worry about but still a nice trip.

Still would have paid for delivery. Princess retail prices are ex-Plymouth.

Re: But is it cheaper?

You're gonna put 80hrs on the boat @ 20knots maybe a lot more if you're down to displacement speed in rough weather. Now whilst the trip may not harm the engines, your boat is still gonna have 80hrs more on the engines when you sell her so you've got to factor a little extra depreciation in the value of the boat. Then, doubtless, the boat will break down so you'll be stuck is some flea ridden Spanish port for days. Plus, of course, do you really want a load of forum members on your brand new boat for 2 - 3 weeks puking on the carpet and blocking up the bogs?
I'd stick on a ship if I was you. The extra cost is insignificant in the overall value of the boat and you'll still have a new boat when it gets to the Med

Re: Who\'s up for it

Hmm Not sure I'd bring a boat that size through the biscay, the range isn't that good (nice boat though) and so you stints would have to be smaller I guess 200-400 miles at a time? If time isn't an issue you could just hop port to port and I'm sure it would be very nice and a real adventure but I wouldn't do it just to save a couple of grand. The wear on the boat would be noticable expecially if you have some bad weather. Other problems you may come across is bad fuel, in a boat with limited range you'll find yourself buying fuel in some not so perfect locations. You'll also need to service the mains and genset before and probably after a journey like that (another added cost).
Coming through the canels would be another great adventure but I've heard you do get knocked around a little.
Dockwise I have used a number of times and they have always been good. Do cover the boat as the salt spray and soot really does make the boat very dirty.
I was booked onto yachttransport for the 25th April to Mallorca but will unfortunately miss that sailing so may have to come across the Atlantic on our own bottom. When calculating the costs I had to include, fuel, crew food, crew flights, engine oil, tellus oil, racors etc, dockage at safe havens, customs and imigration fees and the crew thankyou meal when we get to the destination.
As for hiring a captain to do it, be careful, make sure it is a good captain and not a mate of a mates brothers, friends, sister in law who drove a boat once and calls himself/herself a captain.

Either way, see you in the med when you get there.

Dont forget in your computations, a full fuel up in Gib at 30p a ltr!!! Magnum, I brought my 50ft down from Nice to Sotogrande Spain last year, only regret is I did it to quickly. If I were doing it again i would take my time and park it up at convienient places for return flights. ie,in your case Faro, Gib, Alicante. Palma. Why rush the trip when you could slide it over during the course of a season?

Hi Magnum

My trip was Windermere to Southampton by road

Load at Soton

Peters and May were excellent, arranging and co-ordinating collection from Windermere, and they loaded at Soton. I put covers on upholstry and strapped everything down but was advised not to cover boat (Can't remember why but I think it was because the loaders would probably rip it off anyway to get the right cradle points). The delivery was delayed a few days but Peters and May made sure the road transporter was alongside for loading at the right time.

Soton to Palma by boat - couple of days longer than planned but OK. However the boat was FILTHY with soot when it arrived. Have to say that after a bit of elbow grease it cleaned up great so no lasting damage. Did have bent guardrail which cost 10 euros for a new bracket and 130 euros to fit it ! A sign of things to come........

Plan was unload at Palma and to Alcudia on her own bottom using local skipper from boat services company - BIG MISTAKE. I don't know exactly what happened but the boat broke down after about half an hour out of Palma leading to a summer of fun..................................................................

What would I do differently? Firstly make sure the boat is well covered - the dirt is really unbelievable. Supervise the loading and unloading yourself - they really don't give a sh%t about your pride and joy. DONT hire a local skipper you don't know.

When are you planning to be there? If you fancy a Mallorca forum get together please get in touch.

After our experiences last year with the cowboy engineers we really felt like packing it all in but I have to say that now the season is here we are really looking forward to the rest of this year.

All the best

We leave on the 2nd May! but perhaps we can catch up later in the year. If you are out again before your boat then you are very welcome to come and see how the other half live and rough it on a 30' Bayliner for a day - its probably about the size of your tender /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wish I had!
I honestly can't remember why I was advised not to.

This is what Princess have advised :-

In either event I would strongly recommend a shipping cover for the boat. The ships funnel can leave deposits of oil and soot on the top sides which is very difficult to remove.

Dockwise schedules

Aswade, agree Dockwise is best and their loading method is great, but AFAIK they do no (or nearly no) services from Cherbourg or NW Europe down to the Med. I just tried their website and it offers nothing from NW Europe to Med. Their business is mostly trans-oceanic it seems. I would have liked to use them last year Cherbourg to Toulon or Palma but they didn't do it, or even anything close....

Hmmm. I dont think weight is at all an issue. It's a ship and the load under the deck hatches was rolls of paper (heavy!). They workked out a loading order and packed them onto the deck as tight as possible like jigsaw pieces, and inho what matters to them is the size of your boat's footprint .

I didn't pay VAT.

I got our dealer to book it as they said they gave the shippers lots of business and would get me a better rate. Which they seem to have done. Your footprint is bigger than ours but not massively, so it looks to me like you seem to be getting rack rate "retail" prices

Draining silencers was fine. They let us do it when the boat was in the slings. No rush, they were helpful.
You dont need to refill them, they fill themselves

Yup that does sound about right. The same ship might go onwards to Palma or some other port? Worth asking. Alternatively, Gibraltar is conveniently non EU, if you were to revert to my VAT stuff. The saving would pay several years worth of €325's a night! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: You need to approach this from a new angle

You asked for alternatives.

a) Advertise your boat for charter from Torquay

b) advise client only two weeks left are from 1/9/05 but good news is you can offer a 50% discount if they leave it in Guernsey.

c) Same again untill you get your boat delivered, fuel paid for and several thousands in the bank.

If anyone fails you have a contract that they pay for skipper to complete their leg.

Put my name down for 3rd week sept (Guersey to Jersey), my kids know not to puke in the fridge and it's weeks since any toys got stuck in the macerator. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
