Hi,
After 8 brill years of boating, we have sold up (mainly due to a change of location and lack of time) we have decided that that was a mistake and we can't live without some sailing in our lives!

We are looking to "share"/"borrow"/"hire" a boat for say 2 x 1 weeks a year and a few weekends, lets say 4 weekends a year....would be prepared to pay any owner a fixed monthly amount for this privilege, do such schemes exist?
I have looked into sailtime and such, but they are too expensive for us, always on fancy new boats in locations that are not suitable. In the perfect world it would be a 32 > 35ish footer 5/6 berth bilge keel or lift (takes to the ground) somewhere in Portsmouth or Chichester.

I am just looking to potter about with the kids to the usual Cowes/Bembridge/Lyminton etc in half decent weather.

Anyone know of anything/anyone/schemes/websites that may suit?

Thanks

My in-laws have a shared boat so it's 2 couples sharing maintenance and costs plus shared ownership. They got into this by visiting their local yacht club and asking around and through word of mouth eventually met suitable partners. You could try advertising on club notice boards and websites but I think face to face meeting people is going to be the most practical way to find potential like-minded sailors. There are plenty of clubs and moorings around your area to look in. You might try talking to the harbour master too for ideas.

Good luck

http://www.boatbuddys.co.uk/ Its been going for about a year I think. I have thought about it hard as an option of sharing the ever escalating costs of sailing but as yet have to jump in. I understand though that it is working reasonably well for those who are involved. I guess the key thing is to make sure that you are clear as to what you want out of the relationship and that the boat owner is similarly clear as to what they want/will provide/quality etc.

Good luck - it would be good to know if the scheme is any good?

Having just bought out my boat partners after 5-7 years, I would say don't do it. It starts off OK, but the differences of option start to mount up.

We need a new battery charger/lifejackets/torch/EPIRB, no we don't.
The saloon table is too big, no it isn't.
I want to stay in the Canary Islands, I don't.
The boat should be returned to base with ample time for charging batteries and thorough cleaning, I like to get back an hour or two before I leave for my flight.

And so it goes on ...

Have you checked out charter rates with Sunsail at Port Solent?
