I've always been fond of boat names in English, as displayed on foreign craft, and their sometimes curious humour. I recently came across this little masterpiece from an old slide;

What's your favourite?

Saw a boat up at the Folly many years ago

Storm

and on the tender

Drizzle T.T. Storm

I remember a sail training yacht in the solent called...Yachtmaster....

Not sure what the reason was but I remember the mayday.
The woman on the radio sounded more embarrassed than scared.

Fifty years ago my Mum and Dad had a boat called Weirbin on the Trent. She was called that when they bought her. They asked lots of people if they had any clues what it meant. Not really, people said. Perhap she was named after some romantic location in India or Russia . . .

Then one day they were motoring through Nottingham when some local lads shouted 'Weirbin, look Weirbin! Weer ya bin. Mister? Weer ya bin?'. Mystery solved.

I have fond memories of me as a four or five year old standing on a bar stool in the wheelhouse steering Weirbin down the Trent with my Dad standing behind me to 'help'. He's 84 now and still has a boat on the Hamble, although he doesn't get to it very often.

My boat's name Penguin seems rather staid in comparison.

There was, possibly still is, a small motorboat in Newhaven made by 'Fletcher' and the owner has named it Norman Stanley...(memories of Ronnie Barker).. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
