Boat names that should be

Following on from the other two threads, I have before thought of boat names that would particularly suit certain boats, for instance, if I were to own a Feeling, it would have to be called Peculiar or Frisky perhaps. The other boat name to suit would have to go on a little 19ft Memory, that would have to be called Lost!

I've mentioned it before but a boat of that type called 'That Sinking Feeling' can't have been too popular with the Coastguards; I doubt 'Red Alert' was either ?!

Well not the sort of boat you are probably thinking of, but when we retire we plan on buying a narrowboat and liveaboard for a few years exploring the whole of the river and canal network.

We will name the boat "Narrow Escape"

I like the "appropriate" names one sees on GK29s.
A couple of local ones that come to mind are:-

Gin & TonicK and General Konfusion

I've always sort of liked the logic that went into naming a catamaran "Tunnel".

Feeling called Feelin' Groovy
GK called Goodness Knows
Another called Golly n' Klyde
Cat called A Nice Pair
And all the ISC dinghies at Cowes have clever names

Rather than start yet another boat names thread, I will go for a slight drift.

When we found our yacht it had a name which we both liked, and therefore had no desire to change it. The previous (first) owner had named the boat from new, and did not want to retain the name. We like it, and I believe so do most people who sail with us.

As part of my job I spend several days every month on ships, and having a lot of spare time on board I often look through the ITU volumes (which you can find on virtually all ships). They contain the details of tens of thousands of vessels, theoretically all those which have a call sign and MMSI number, and whose details have been forwarded to the ITU by their National Radio Registration Authority.

Here are a few amusing ones I have found recently, which are all UK flag pleasure craft.

Foreign Affair
Skintus
Petitcache
Thirsty Work
Flying Pyjamas
Lap Dancer
La Perla Negra
Hole in the Water
Don't Ask
Fendorf
Hayle Mary

And for causing utter confusion in radio conversations with the coastguard:

"No Name"
and
"Not Yet Allocated"


And yes, there is "Snooks", and even a "SWMBO"

But still my all time favourite by far

Heard a boat calling Solent Coastguard many years ago, his boat was named "Pay Day" and the coastguard advised him most earnestly to consider renaming her!

'Myrmidon' on a Ruffian, though it would always get mispelt.
I liked 'Border Reiver' on a Scottish-owned Rustler 36.
