Boat\' Name

Hi all,
The last owners of the boat, have taken the name with them. So We now have to decide on a new name, but none of us can agree, so the question is:
How did you decide on your boat's name?
Thanks

Moose

Re: Boat\' Name

I didnt name my boat. Coliholic did. Didnt like his name to much. So now its Mucky Farter on account of the smoke. However having now been dosed with Soltron this no longer applies. New names that seem more apt are. Sweet Farter. Or Wet Farter!!

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: Boat\' Name

Well Moose, I chose mine from the title of a Van Morrison track that I like - hence "Coney Island". A friend with a Shetland chose "Precious Time"- another VM track. In the harbour there is a Cat called "Brown Eyed Girl" - yet another VM track!. And finally there is also a "Maggie May" from Rod Stewart.

Has that given you any ideas?

I think we've exhausted Van Morrison though!

At the end of the game, the King and the Pawn go back in the same box.

Re: Boat\' Name

mate of mine named his boat after his wife - called it Double D.

My boat name is greek meaning sea / ocean - "Thalassa"

There's some good one's at our marina

My overdraft
Swift purchase
Momentary lapse of reason

Pride and joy - on a fithy boat as well - very odd

You could always merge your names together knew some folks that did that

Hope this heps

Re: Boat\' Name

Had the same problem some time ago, much harder to invent a name than it may seem, then you come up with one only to find it has already been used. Good luck!
And please do not weld you and your wife`s name together to get something like "Colinlynne" it just doesn`t work

Re: Boat\' Name

If you are going to tour the Med then don't make the name recognisably English. There may be some folk with historic grudges or just plane giving the message 'I don't come here very often'
Also something that sounds a bit international over the radio.
Saw 'Big Boobies' in N Spain how about that for starters

Re: Boat\' Name

I saw a Plan B in falmouth
When asked the guy said Plan A was to leave it to the kids.

My basis is always think how daft it would sound as a distress signal or easy to confuse
We have called all our boats after sea birds sometimes lating names and sometimes welsh.

You sail on the white bits, anchor on the blue bits, get drunk on the yellow bits

Re: Boat\' Name

Our sailing boat is called Magler. It was given this name from new (not by us) and apparently it's an old Cornish word meaning someone who suffers extremes of mood - up one minute down the next which is apt as it's a Moody.

I've no idea if it's true, however I like the idea!

Re: Boat\' Name

Ours is called "Don't Panic", cos we don't. Got a tow from Cowes Harbour Master the other week due to rope round prop etc. Brief chat on the VHF and at the end he could not resist saying "Don't Panic, Don't Panic!" Apparently they had a good chuckle in the office on that one!

In the process of buying another boat, may keep "Don't Panic" although SWMBO quite fancies "Ask About Face"...................

"Hopefully that won't be too expensive to fix?"

Re: Boat\' Name

Had a right old chuckle when "Jenny Taylor" was heard on the VHF... But how about "Outer Space" or "Avon" .....

Re: Boat\' Name

My mate called his boat 'Churia' after joining 'Chuck' and 'Gloria' together. Problem was he called his new boat 'Churia' AFTER he'd separated from his wife. Didn't half piss his girlfriend off!

Re: Boat\' Name

Two words are best for being heard on the radio. For example my boat was called 'Golden Girl' from the kids letterland phonetic alphabet. Also cos my wife's got blond hair (supposedly).

Avoid 'Mucky Pants' that I saw on a yacht.

Also avoid 'Close Those Deals' unless your Donald Trump. Otherwise people will just think you're a complete tosser.

Re: Boat\' Name

Yes can be more difficult choosing a boat name than names for the kids, at least with the kids you've got to be a bit sensible as I told my son Pancake the other day ('cos he was born on Shrove Tuesday), Yes I know it's an old joke but then what else can you expect.

We chose our boat name from a huge list that we found on www.boatus.com. Don't know if they're still there but when I last looked there was about 1,800 names there so that may be a starting point. Printed them all off, and we both chose the half dozen or so that we each liked the sound of, wrote them on post it notes and had them dotted all around the house and after a week or so we both settled on the same name, Aquaholic.
