Boat insurance problem

Firstly - thanks everyone for all your help so far. Tom and I are very new to cruising having just completed our ICC so all help is gratefully received. Anyway, our latest problem - we're planning on cruising French canals, then coastal Mediterranean, dropping anchor whenever we can to save on costs. Navigators & General have a clause to say that the boat's not covered if it's spent 24 hours outside the confines of a secure Marina - huh?!?

I think I'd try a different insurance company. Try Pantaenius, they have no exclusions.

I'd re-read the cover - it might say not covered is left for 24hours or more unattended outside of a secure marina.

I insure with GJW of Liverpool. No problems.

It is getting increasingly difficult to go about the north-western Med and anchor most of the time. In fact it is getting difficult anywhere.

10 years ago we once spent 400 consecutive nights at single anchor. Now several of the anchorages we used have got fish farms. Some have local municipalities who have forbidden anchoring in the only part of the bay with good holding ground. Others are now a marina. Some have got into the hands of green loonies and boats are banned. Others are so overcrowded, especially at weekends when the big motor yachts come out to play, that they become dangerous.

Be careful. You may have to avoid the fleshpots and go for the offbeat places. That's probably what you want anyway.

something wrong there- it would mean no anchoring for more than a day, which is unreal.

have a re-read. its easy to misunderstand the legalese. if it still reads like that, then talk to them. terms are negotiable in practise

failing that, vote with your keel. but first make a shopping list of all the things you want - single handed sailing at night, coverage to the e med, racing risks etc since the time to get all these for very little is when you first approach a new company. nothing like a dutch auction.
