I'm currently with GJW direct and now that we're planning to cross Biscay and the Atlantic this year they won't renew it unless we have a minimum of 3 people for Biscay and ideally 4 for the Atlantic...

We'll be doing both as a couple as that's how we cruise :)

Can anyone recommend a decent insurance company that is ok with cruising couples?

We used Pantaenius quite happy with two handed long distance sailing and they have a reputation for fast payments. An example after a hurricane hit Grenada and many yachts were damaged a Pantaenius surveyor was on the first plane to land after the hurricane and all payments were made in a week. I got that from two yachts we know who claimed.

We're with Bishop Skinner (but a motor boat) and when we did Biscay we confirmed we would be coast hopping and they agreed to just the two of us. However, one condition was that we were clear of Biscay by 30 September.

Another vote for Bishop Skinner which (crucially, if not quite uniquely) gives the impression of being run by real people who view customers as equally real. My first Biscay crossing with them had the usual skipper-plus-two requirement. (The second crew turned out to be a former RN able-seaman in an urn, en route to having his ashes scattered off Portugal. The small print mentioned nothing about crew with a pulse.). Over the years their conditions moderated to the point that Biscay single-handing was OK, and even long Atlantic passages. One crew, plus windvane steering, was required for the lengthiest Atlantic runs, although the prospect of anyone claiming if it did go tits-up solo, seemed slight.

The quality of insurance is about far more than premiums and there's much to be said for staying with a company that suits you.

We insure through Topsail. Used them both for Pacific/ Indian Ocean/ Atlantic crossings and for Liveaboard existence here in the UK. Competitive, knowledgeable, fair. No connection other than as a customer.

We use Pantaenius and are very happy with their cover. Used them in the UK, to the med, Caribbean, Pacific, Australia and up to South East Asia.
