Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

Thats a reassuringly thick lump of hull there! Not sure that incorporating the Cross of St George in the new Squadron logo will appeal to Fairline's Celtic market:)

In fairness, the model is the "78Custom" and for non-ingerlanders I hear F/L are planning to show the 7-8 pennants in a metric version:

Tee hee! More than enough to be used as mains on many boats... :)
Didn't you think of bolting a couple of electric motors to the shafts?
Perfect for mooring with no engines (bound to raise some eyebrows...) and/or some trolling in the middle of a passage!
At a guess, they could be good for 3kts or so.

Must be another instalment/up date due by now?

Yep, sorry. I haven't been to the factory since the last pictures (above) nor got any news of build progress. I've been busy organising manufacture of panels for the flybridge dash (being made by the excellent Axon components) and er doing my day job. I think James Barke of Essex Boatyards is there this Friday so I'll ask him to grab a few pics, maybe of engines installed if that has been done

James is there on Friday -with me. I am looking at the new Squadron 50 - very excited!

Is that a built boat or a plywood mockup? I've seen the mockups in the prototype shed. Anyway, if you are at Nene Valley site rather than Barnwell Rd and you get 5 mins maybe grab me a couple of pics of mine please - hull #70 in the Sq78 shed, next door to where (I think) the prototypes are. Easy to spot, as there are only 4 boats in the 78 shed (#'s 67 to 70) and mine is the least built!

Either way, have a good trip and let us know what you decide

Only the plywood mockup at this stage. I will ask if I can see your magnificent ship.

Ah, well then you'll be in the shed which is right next to the one in which the 78s are built, so it's a 30 second walk. Please drop by and have a look and get me a few pics, if you have time :-) I'm supposed to make a stage payment next Tuesday (dammit) so it would be good to know it's still there!

I'll be interested to hear how useful you find the plywood mockup as a customer. The aft deck mockup is great, and is nicely detailed. But the interior model has all its surfaces in bare wood so you need much imagination to get a feel of it in its finished materials and surfaces.

I seem to remember that Princess stage payments coincide with the installation of the engines.

If this is the same at Fairline, would this mean that the engines are in place?

If so, some pics would be very interesting.

In the contract the stage payment is just a fixed date, Aug 10th I think. It isn't specifically linked to the engines, but come to think of it the timing does coincide with the engines and Fairline would have known that when we were agreeing the contract.

I hope amillington can get some pics on Friday and post them here then we'll know!

Or did they fit the fins already?

Actuators are fitted so there are two shafts sticking out thru bottom of hull. But the actual fins don't go on till just before launch, after it has gone by road to the launch/pre-delivery facility in Ipswich (E coast UK, a little north of London)

Hello chap, new bateau looks spiffing.

I'm surprised by the speed of their progress, what is the total build time from start to hand over and how many man hours go into it?

Now that's a sight I'd like to see. :)

Have you got a name selected yet?

I'd like to see it too. Never seen one of these on the road. It goes at night and they have an agreed route with the police and have to take down some signs and streetlamps to get round some of the corners

New name kinda selected but I'm cogitating for another month before deciding for sure :-)

About 8 months Ben. They started lay up beginning of May and it should be finished end of December. Remember they do many things in parallel: a team is working on the deck mould and another on the hull. And the cabinetry team are making all the furniture now so it will be ready to drop in when required. All in, at a guess and based on Fairline overall data, it's something like 8 man years of fairline build time, not counting labour time of component suppliers. Plus maybe a full month of my time (my drawing board is scorching!) :)

....aaarrgghh a 'Guess-the-Name' competition. That should deluge yhis thread for 4 weeks . With apologies (?) to the original boat of that name ...'Ca Suffit'

That's enough of that EME! No point guessing cos I'm cogitating on a few name candidates and the list changes from day to day. Will let you know asap :-)
