Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

Woohoo!! She officially became mine just now. The original contract I agreed back in April had a deposit on signing, stage payment in the summer and final payment 23/12, which just cleared into their account. Essex Boatyards have just confirmed to me that the boat is mine. Woo hoo!!

may I be the first to post pictures of YOUR boat then? My camera battery went flat so it's Iphone only I'm afraid.

Wehey thanks Elessar! Yup, that's me boat. They told me the radar tower is too tall (the metal frame above the GRP part is non standard) so they have put a dummy tower on the boat, and as I can see from your pic they've chucked my real one on the floor! :D

I have an exhibitor's pass so will be along in the new year to see what's what. Not much point in going there yet I think

But thanks again for the pics

Well, if the clearance is not enough for the arch, maybe someone at FL knew better than ourselves, before deciding to not fit the laser and its sail... :)

The Laser mast is in 2 sections, and I have the 4.7 rig as well as the full rig, and the lower mast section for the 4.7 is easily not higher than the radar tower. You'd have to roll up the top of the sail and have it a trapezium shape, but it would still make the point!

I've asked Pantaenius to confirm they are covering it for the show period. Awaiting their reply. If not I'll ask Fairline to do something about it or pay an extra premium or whatever. Fairline promise to repair any nicks and scratches of course, which they must be able to do as they built the thing!

Yes let's do the "compare insurance prices" thread in new year

I wonder if it makes a difference to your quote if you include a 17yo boy on the helm...like it does if you're insuring a Citroen Saxo? :D:D

in one of the posts you mention about trips you can do "without" re- fueling,
Are you keen on getting fuel at your ususal fuel supplier ?
I read that they take a test sample at each filling.

When you charter do you use Red Diesel (lo tax diesel) ? I believe you can if I'm correctly informed ?
with these multiple fueltanks, you have many options, also for the gen sets...

Oooo - a flat top rig - really up to date then.

Congratulations on completing the purchase. If you are anything like me you'll be popping into the boat show everyday to get another glimpse!

I did that on my previous boat and it gave me the chance to meet plenty of forumites in person, as well as dream up extra mods before handover.

Blimey, I just realised that this thread reached a number of views which is more than triple of "Drift a thread" in the Lounge - which btw is 8 months older.

And so it should, Congratulations on a great build, and a wonderful end product.

One of the more interesting & popular threads on the forum.

For me, good to see the stages a build goes through, and the thought processes for the engineering required.

I hope to get to see her one day, and maybe get the chance to poke around in the internals.

superb thread and boat.

so if gludy had paid as much attention on his trader build he could be out enjoying it instead of having a yr of stress to get his money back?

lesson to be learnd then is pay attention to what is being built or pay a qaulified local person to keep things on track

Gludy's Trader 575 was indeed a terribly built boat (listed for sale again in current MBY I see) but it's importnat not to tar all with too wide a brush. I reckon if you order a boat from the UK big 4, or the big Italian yards, or many small privately owned Italian yards, you'll get a top quality product even if you never show up to inspect it. My reason for visiting the factory every 3 weeks or so was to develop the design mods with the Fairline team (you can email drawings back and forth all day but at certain stages you have to see/touch it) not to check they were building it well!

Bart when the boat is in France I buy fuel from www.fioul83.fr who imho provide a top service and very high quality fuel (biocide treated). They are my first choice, but the reason I want to be able to do Antibes-Balearics-Antibes on one fuel load is more to do with convenience. The flow rate in med pumps is so slow it's a real hassle refueling a biggish boat. For everyone else, as well as me. For example in summer 2009 I was about to return to Antibes from Menorca so I went to Mahon fuel dock at 7.30am, ready for 8am opening. Unfortunately a Sq70 was there before me. He took 4000, I took 2200litres. This took more than an hour, and during this delay about 30 inceasingly-annoyed smaller boats wanting maybe 100-300litres each gathered around the fuel dock. We were not popular, but what can you do if you have to make a long sea crossing and need full tanks?

In contrast, in Antibes Fioul83 comes to the boat (on its home berth) with a truck and a big flow rate pump, and they pump 6000litres un 30mins or so, and do all the heavy lifting so the girls who look after the boat supervise the whole thing while I'm in London and pay with the boat's cr card. Veeeery easy for me!

Yes if a boat is coded for charter and has an employed crew person you can buy detax diesel in France at about €0.60/litre under the commercial boat exemption. It's actually blue not red. There are strict paperwork requirements but I order fuel by email and just pdf the papers to Fioul83 and they bring the tanker lorry the next day. Very easy. Similar in Italy for a non Italian flagged boat. In general, year by year, the rules get a bit tighter too.

Thanks rb_s and others for the kind words

Yes, as I worlk in london I'll probably go there a few times! Did you find any damage to the boat caused by the boat show traffic, or was it 100% perfect when you took final delivery?

There were no problems at all from normal punters on the boat.

However it was SIBS and for some barmy reason the organisers lifting company started to lift boats out of the show with a gale blowing (I presume they work to deadline to empty the show). Mine got pranged cause either the banksman wasn't paying attention or they lost control. I had a dark blue hull so ended up getting a repair and full hull respray to sort it.
