Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

Woohoo!! She officially became mine just now. The original contract I agreed back in April had a deposit on signing, stage payment in the summer and final payment 23/12, which just cleared into their account. Essex Boatyards have just confirmed to me that the boat is mine. Woo hoo!!

Congratulations,

always a very key moment but given the way you have done this purchase it should be especially nice!

Happy Sailing in her

Hmmm

Congrats...

And I thought I was having an expensive day having just cleared my Dec amex...

Enjoy and I look forward to seeing it at LBS as well as asking every Fairline salesman, or maybe even the hire in's "what goes on those chocks..."

Congratulations and enjoy !

thanks for sharing this process so openly.
Its a once in a livetime experience and story for most forum members I think.
full respect to JFM and the FL team !
for the achieved level of quality and détail

CONGRATULATIONS, Must be a GREAT feeling...... :) :) :) You must be so proud !

BTW... I've learned so much from this post THANKS for sharing your experiences and information...

Sincere congratulations JFM and thank you for sharing the build. I, like many other newbies, have learnt a lot. Best of luck and hope to meet you at LIBS:)
Great - well done and huge congratulations!

I assume you have Pantaenus cover in place already:-)

I think at LIBS us lot ought to say "Oi! what are those chocks for? - a nice same as hull colour Matching Laser would really look nice there with a colourful sail"

Ah... hang on a minute...

EDIT (10 mins later). Yes!

Thanks for all the congratulations. Building a new boat like this (not that I actually built it, Fairline did) has been a lot of fun I must say. I might do it again in 3 years time :-)

Joking aside on insurance, Pantaenius (whom I've been a customer of for about 8 years) quoted me £10.6k premium, while GJW quted £16k. No prizes for guessing which one I went for. And afaik there is no second-rateness or corner cutting with the Pantaenius product. Sometime we should make a thread where we can all compare insurance rates

That roughly the same % of hull value I get from them - with clean claim record.

I can confirm the claims issue as when new my boat was caught by a passing MoBo my anchor to his Stbd side bow rail. we were moored stern too - we wiped out his stbd side rails and loads of gelcoat went flying. End result bent Delta stock and bent bow roller.

One call and they had an assessor down in 1 hr and swift confirmation that they would handle everything and deal with the guilty party... Year later same thing happened again (when mr&mrs tcm were taking wine with us on the F/B) - ditto result.

Edit - this needs a separate thread but I also think the policy is very big ship too. Like Hull & Machinery covered (5 yrs for engine stuff)

jfm - i keep forgetting to ask this but - on these 20m+ boats what sort of Class / MCA stuff needs to be certified? For instance is the stability tested with an inclining experiment or what?

No it's pretty sraightforward. It only gets complex at 24m+, or if you want to MCA code it for Category 1 or 0, or >15 people

So to keep things simple, I've bought a <24m boat (that's loadline; my LOA is >24m but it's not LOA that counts), coded it for area 2 (up to 60nm from port, ie 120nm passage) and 12 passengers + 3 crew

That being the case, the stability is taken as ok from the design and certifications, and I dont have to have an actual stabiity test on my boat. And my mods/equipment is the easy stuff like good quality fire and liferaft gear, 90% of which is sensible stuff anyway even if you are not coding

The only glitch on being >20m is you need a 300mm dia ship's bell (try finding one under about 400quid; what a waste!) and a very loud horn

There are still tax advantages in France to having the boat coded, btw, and as I say 90% of the coding requirements are good sensible safety precautions/gear anyway

That seems to make good sense Deleted User

Psychologically though, I find myself wanting to consider my d range to be whatever it is at near hull speed, say 9kts, rather than 5 or 6 knots which might double my mpg. 9-10kts is pretty slow but somehow quite nice (on occasions, not all the time), whereas 6 kts is blooody awful slow and not nice, and i can't see myself ever planning a cruise say France Corsica 100nm at 6kts = 17hours. Indeed, I'd prob spend those 17 hours wondering if the depreciation hit of selling the boat with 1200hrs rather than 700 (say) will cost me more than the fuel saved :-). Just imho, but I think Hurricane has found the same: he speaks of nice slow crusing/pootling, but I think he means 9-10kts not drive-you-mad 5-6kts

Yes you're right. We had a few trips this summer when we started off at about 6.5kts and after an hour or two of that, it did my head in and it was pedal to the metal for the rest of the trip. I sort of have it in my head that I'm going to cruise everywhere at d speeds when/if I retire but I'm going to have to work on recalibrating my brain because at the moment, I can't stand it for long.
Good point about the depreciation. You expect to see higher hours on a d or sd boat but anything over 70-100hrs a season on a planing boat will hit its value even if you explain to the buyer that you've cruised everywhere at 6kts. Good reason to hit those throttles:)

Congratulations jfm. Best wishes to you and all who sail in her. May your seas always be the right shade of cyan and your lumishores bright.

Very many congratulations. I have followed this excellent thread with avid interest. It has been the very best thread on these forums for years and it has been great to 'share' your purchase. I hope you have some great times with her which are very much deserved. I dont think I will be able to make it to LIBS but maybe will catch you on the South Coast in the new year before she goes to the Med.
Compliments of the season
Derek

Congratulations
I know that it’s a kind of relief.
Don’t know what your arrangements with deposits/guarantees etc but IMO it makes sense to pay for her as quick as possible and have title even though (maybe) you don't actually take delivery yet.
Sorry – a bit presumptuous - I have no idea of your circumstances.
