Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

Is there much more to do regarding sea trials, commissioning and handover? Or is the boat complete save for putting straight after LIBS as far as you are concerned? I didn't notice the tender or laser. Will they be added for LIBS?

Yup, there is a bit to do, so it will go back to Ipswich (Fairline's facility there) for a couple of weeks after LIBS. Jobs include repitching the props, fitting the main tender, tweaking the Oceanair blinds that are a bit of a disappointment, changing some fabrics in the crew cabin (they accidentally installed a yellowy vinyl on the walls of the crew cabin that I specifically asked right at the beginning not to be used anywhere on the boat cos I hate it...) and a few bits of hardware to fit. And a full handover to me, though I'm not sure what that involves :-)

The main tender wont be on for LIBS. Several practical reasons for that. The Laser isn't on either, because (apparently) someone from Fairline sales dept has asked for it not to be on, which seems crazy to me. The "optima white" custom Laser is in Fairline's building in Ipswich all ready to go on, fastening device custom made, chocks installed on the boat. I can't for the life of me see why they have said it should not be on the boat for LIBS. If it were up to me, the Laser would be on the boat, with the sail rigged on the lower half of the mast, and sail number 787878 stuck on... :-)

with the lazer hull in fairline white,...
that would be the best eye catcher they could think of at the exhibition,
for their custom work imho

At a guess, they might think that a sailboat is too shabby for the target clients of these boats.
I fully agree that they'd better review such idea, though.
Aside from yourself, Paul Allen for instance (and also others) seems to have a different opinion! :)
...though I understand that he's available to give away his toy for €125M at the moment.

Weird and a shame. I'm just about to drop an email to Miles Moorehouse on an unrelated topic. I'll ask him why they didn't think it was suitable if you want (although I'm sure you talk to him regularly anyway)?

I don't know Miles but of course feel free to put your views to him. I think a pair of empty chocks will look a bit naff :-) My mad plan to rig a sail with 787878 sail number seems infinitely better to me (I have an exhibitor's pass so can do all that the day before the show). Right now, the Laser hull is in Fairline Ipswich and the s78 is inside Excel, so they'd need to transport the Laser to Excel in a van as it, er, missed the boat.

The Laser was made by Performance Sailcraft in Banbury, who are one of the licensed builders of Lasers. There are other licensed manufacturers in Canada and USA. Fairline supplied them with gelcoat to match the white that Fairline use, and Performance Sailcraft (egged on by helpful Laser dealer Purple Marine)kindly stopped production, cleaned out the gelcoat spray nozzles, sprayed the white gelcoat, then cleaned it all again to resume with the standard Laser "vela grey"/off white colour. Quite a mission, and very kind of Performance Sailcraft / Purple Marine to do/arrange it.

You'd think that Performance Sailcraft themselves would also be v keen for it to be there, particularly given the extra effort they went to for the colour match.

What are you going to call the tender? How about 'Less' (er, Matchless, it's the best I could do, sorry :D).

Cheers
Jimmy

... and when you sail away on the tender, does that mean you are Unmatched??

(Oh god, I need to go to the pub)

Cheers
Jimmy

Enough! I never thought such a simple name would cause so much trouble, nor that Firefly625 (aka Alan Turing) would de-code the Swedish Match connection in about 3 minutes. I'm logging off, pubward bound :-)

Hi Bart
I'm not sure about a bed conversion: the boat has 11 beds already, plus lots of space on flybridge and aft deck mattresses :-) But come to think of it, yes you could!

OK then, 12 berths,
thats what I am looking for for my next boat ;)

Fairline can put a fold-down pullman bed in each of the two twin cabins, therefore if you specify 3 beds in the crew space (like my boat) you have 13 beds (that's not counting sofas!)

What are you thinking of for your next boat? Will it be too big to trailer?
