Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Funnily enough the thing that makes me HAVE to visit port is dumping trash.

Nah, just chuck it overboard when nobody is looking.

My only (really minor) concern with this water quality issue (in the unlikely event that you had higher bacteria content than tap water) might be using it in a spa batch (which are susceptible to legionnaires disease). If you've got a pukka Jacuzzi batch then you should be alight though. If you've got a regular bath which has been modified to make it a spa bath then this might be more of a concern.

Next you'll be telling us that the bin ladies are scantily clad blonde bimbos!

Nah, but the girls in small boats selling ice creams are easy on the eye to say the least. Usual conversation on our boat goes something like;

"do you want an ice cream from the nice lady in the boat, son?"

"no thanks dad, I just had one"

"well tough, you're having another one"

Not in Villefranche - there the town runs a bin boat that comes round the anchorage to collect your bagged garbage. Extremely civilised!

Cheers

Blimey I've been there 10 years and didn't know that. Then you rock up in 2012 and talk like a bluddy local :D How do you get the trash boat to come? Is there a number to call?

I'm sorry to be such a tourist on the subject but will there be a trash compactor on Match 2?

Aaargh. I'd like one but can't fit it. We spent ages on Match 1 finding a space for one. There is of course loads of space, but there is nothing in the galley/utility areas that I'm prepared to lose in order to make space for it. Fairline fit them to plenty of sq78s without the flybridge-galley stairs because they have more 600mm deep kitchen cabinet space than me, but I would'nt trade those stairs for anything

I keep the trash bins in the anchor locker cos it's enormous, and looking back on cruising with Match1 I didn't really regret not having a compactor

This may sound ridiculous, but maybe look into the idea of a trash compactor not in the galley? Play D'eau has one and it is astonishing just how much garbage that thing can eat!

If you're in the habbit of moving the garbage to a different location then maybe put it into a trash-squisher. That'll save on having so many bags to throw out, you just get a conveniently sized 70kg dead-weight to lug off the boat..
Alternatively you could get a trailer / floating thing to tow with the jet-ski and get one of your sons to drop the rubbish off at a local port? Be a seriously classy bin-man for an afternoon.

On water consumption, just curious as to what you'd expect to use for a lunch stop. I'm guessing 200-250 litres with say 6 or so people on board based on 50-60 (Miele spec) to wash the linen plus same again for dishwasher and basins combined, same again-ish for lavatory flushing, and again for deck showers.

So, on a 90 minute run of the watermaker you would get back to the status quo ante so far as your water tanks are concerned allowing for a nice quiet couple of hours of contemplation and pleasure with the genset off.

Or am I miles out?

I'd say you're about right. But the w/maker is 280/hour, and 90 mins is therefore 400litres, which is a bit better than the s q a for a lunch stop

When you start a cruise of say 4-day-without-visitng-port you have 800 litres of dockwater so you don't actually have to maintain the status quo. You can gradually lag behind so that you retrun to port with say 200. The watermaker merely needs to slow down the depletion rate of the tank, if you see what I mean.

I think my max daily use with a full boat is around 650-700litres. That's going pretty wild/careless. Even that is <3 hours of w/maker @280, and if you count the 45mins of genset for breakfast plus the lunch and dinner hours you always do 3 genset hours even if you don't need afternoon airco and stabs. So it should all be ok. The change from 140litres/hr on Match1 to 280 on Match 2 takes it from a bit marginal to very ok

trash compactor not in the galley?

Hmm but my view is it can only go in the galley or the aft utility area, and within those zones you need a 600mm deep space. It can't go in any living space, in my view. I could fit it in galley or aft utility but I don't want it badly enough to lose any of the stuff I already have there (whether cooking/fridge/laundry appliances, or just cupboard space). Each to their own, but I've thought about it a lot and on balance decided I prefer not to have the compactor. On sale of the boat the new owner could easily lose a cupboard and retro fit one, so no problem on that score

Presumably if I got the next size up of Kahlenbergs i could put just the trash in front of the hooters and fire-em up, and the trash will be ejected a mile away?

That sounds a fabulous arrangement. I thought the w/maker was 180 per hour - just didn't check the figure. But I think that it's such a great benefit to be able to avoid having to run the genset all evening and through the night.

Here are some update factory pics from today. The boat is now "topped", ie deck half attached to hull half. This is a major milestone in the build obviously, and signals completion of the stacks of pre-topping work that is done on the two halves before they're stuck together.

You can see Piers and Toby's nice Kahlenberg horns in these first two shots. The blue stuff on the gelcoat is a rubbery skin to stop scratches; it peels off

The side deck handrail posts are 50mm higher than standard spec, as they were on Match1. The handrail feels more "right" to me like this; the standard height just feels a bit low (to me; I could be on my own with this one...).

Light thru the new crew cabin window. I wonder how visible the cabin insides will be from the dock at night...

It just turned up one morning, ambling round the anchorage (I think it was a Sunday or Monday morning). No need to call anyone, it worked the whole anchorage. No charge, and judging from the reactions from other boats, their arrival wasn't a surprise. It's a biggish workboat, just passes nearby, not alongside - you just launch your tied-up bag on to their deck. All really easy. (I got a lot of value out of my various experiences in VF last year, and I cannot wait to get back again this season).

Cheers
