I have just advertised my boat for sale on B and O etc and within a few hours received this "wonderful" offer. I would love to take up this offer but somehow it doesn't ring true!!!!! : Anyway I have an aversion to cheques and Western Union

What does the team think?

Sounds like a solid enquiry. After all in these days of Credit Crunch etc you can't afford to let a real prospect slip away.

Obviously you forgot to include the price in the ad.
 
Sounds like you have some interest .. I would give him a ring .. Could be expensive though .. See he missed off the bit about sending more money and you giving change .. or Your Bank excepting his Cheque saying its ok .. Only to find out 3 weeks later that its a dud .. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Either that or his english is not very good .. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Maybe as it was priced in sterling totally confused my prospective buyer. I'll try Naira next time.
Perhaps the credit crunch has not reached west africa
 
I seem to remember a scam that worked on the loophole that although the cheque says it has cleared, actually it hasn't.
I would treat the offer with suspicion, the wording looks like something automated where the 'blanks' are filled in from your advert.

Great now he has your telephone number. With bit of digging he could get some registration details from the SSR..... and so it starts. However given his grasp of English and CaPiTaLiZaTiOn I reckon you will be safe.

Don't give him (them) any bank details! ( If you are convinced the guy is genuine go and open up a fresh savings account at a different institution to your own , put a pound in it, then use those details )

A pay as you go mobile number is always a good idea for responding / distributing when selling something. A sim card can be had for a fiver these days and it can be used in your usual phone. Even if you buy a £9.99 P.A.Y.G phone its a good idea if you are selling a significant asset.

A quick point on payments, NEVER NEVER accept any form of cheque, even a bank draft should be treated with caution.

BACS or CHAPS or other wire transfer bank to bank is really the only way to accept payment, but obviously in this case your "buyer" is just a conman/woman!
 
We've just listed ours with a broker - this should sort out all the "scam" problems which may come along. % have been between 4 and 8, and then you generally have a berthing/storage fee too.
We're leaving ours in the water as it then means we could get a day or two's use and potential purchasers can see what she is like in her natural habitat. We'd be paying the winter berthing fees anyway, so it is only an additional couple of weeks we're paying for.
