So I have booked to have a stern thruster fitted. With the remote control that does the bow as well, it is to be fitted by an engineer based in our marina and quoted by him, now I have had the same quote from boatfolk and I will have to pay them although he is doing the job. It seems they are doing this with all contractors .

Be very careful with this way of business , one of my clients which comes on here booked and had new sea cocks fitted , they used a third party , his boat nearly sank , as you can imagine all sorts of politics , everyone blaming each other , no ones fault etc etc .
BF wanted to put own engineers on to sort out the mess , been a nightmare for him . I cannot say who unless he sees this and wants to join in , its on going at least a year on . Be very careful , is this Wales or are you down south now ?

Sale the boat over to deganwy marina, have it lifted there and get the job done by who ever you please. cheeky b@star@s. you all need to nip that in the bud !

Well they do boat care now so would imagine , i can see them banning diy work next so they make more money , i might have mine done while out but they cant do it if cold . Who do you use

I hope they have fully read their liability insurance too, in case the subcontractor damages your pride and joy.

If your engineer is now being employed by Boat Folk to service your vessel at the same price, chances are that BF are taking a commission from him, so suspect his quote was high to begin with. Could be that BF wont allow him to do the job independently, that sucks!
Volvopaul warns of the difficulty that could arise in the event of a problem- , ie is the engineer an "Agent of the Company(BF) or employed independently by you, ? I agree with Hullbaloo , go talk to Deganwy Maina

How I’ve read the case I mentioned yes but after a years loss of boating and insurance company legal involvement.

There must be some insentive for BF to want to do the work or bill it out to you as there is no point them increasing their turn over without profit. They will also be taking responsibility and liability should anything go wrong as your contact would be with them and not your specialist contractor. I expect the price was loaded and had a commission already built in for BF.

I had the quote months ago .

Perhaps they get a better price for the parts or have one from a cancelled order? Could you ask them why they are wanting to do it the way that does not make sense to you see see what they say?

It may well be they now have to work under their wing or go , and they are honouring quotes .

I would say they are honouring the quotes for now and then going forward will rack the price up.
I’m having second thoughts now about getting any work done in Conwy, might wait until it’s moved.
