I notice in this month’s PBO that expert contributor Colin Jones is flying the Blue Ensign abroad.

I seem to remember from this Forum that Blue Ensign’s should only be flown in UK waters.

What is correct and should he be prosecuted ?

Re: So RN should not fly White ?

Interesting.

Do the French, Spanish etc know that his boat is British Registered just by the Blue Ensign ?

If they don't, they should do.

Sorry, but you are wrong.

The Blue Ensign, along with the White and Red, defaced or no, are recognised insignia of the crown; and as such of the United Kingdom. There is no legislation that states that any ensign or colours of any nation must be changed for any other in foreign waters.

If you are legally allowed to "wear" a blue then there is nothing to stop you doing so.
The only suggestion that is made in some books is that it may cause you less problems if you stick to a "red".

This is because it confuses some countries. Most of them only have one ensign.

I think there may be more details if you do a search in Scuttlebut.

The only people who would get into trouble for wearing a blue ensign , are those who are not entitled. And it is the person, who entitles the boat to fly that ensign. If he or she is not present, then that boat should wear a normal red ensign.

RN officers are entitled to board a vessel wearing a blue ensign and demand to see the warrant of entitlement, if it cant be produced, the blue ensign will be confiscated.

Not all blue ensign wearers are ex RN, there are specific yacht clubs who are entitled to warrant their members to use an undefaced blue ensign.

You are

under a misapprehension.

providing the skipper has the permit to fly a blue, white or defaced blue ensign it is utterly in order.

There are more advantages than disadvantages - many continentals think a blue ensign means the boat is Oz or Kiwi. Most officials recognise the blue ensign as being somewhat "official" and treat one with rather more respect than a boat flying the red ensign.

Finally I overheard a Guarda Costiera in Alghero explaining to one of their port officials that only "milords flew that colour of flag."

I think many find the whole Blue Ensign situation bizarre. An alternative flag to show that we are British , but not freely available to it’s subjects.

Clearly, the vast majority that fly it now are not ex services and it’s original purpose although of some use a couple of centuries ago has lost all significance. It would also appear that largely tax payer’s money is used to administer it and the poor Navy have to waste time to check and ‘prosecute’ miscreants , who although probably British Passport holders, fail on the account of not being a member of the right sports and social club.

I would greatly welcome some of the contributors to this thread who clearly fly the Blue Ensign as to how this benefits sailing and our image abroad.

Clubs administer and issue the warrants for a charge, the applicant purchases the flag. I don't believe there is actually a cost to the tax payer. I don't think that the navy actually expends any resources on policing. It is a personal thing like a club tie, burgee or badge. I doubt that it actually has any benefit nor does it have an obvious defecit.

Probably falls into the category of tradition and (begin rant) something else that is under threat from politically correct/new labour/grauniad reading/spoilsport/jealous/grumpy(delete as applicable) types. Soon to be gone like the Empire etc. and what a bland lot of clones we will become. I must rush out and get my euroflag and paint my boat white (end rant).

Where can I get hold of an ANTI-Euro flag ? Something like a Euro flag with a dirty great big RED cross across it ?????

It seems that everyone is getting on the display a Euro Flag acrt and I wish to start a rival Anti-Euro Flag display group !!!!

I was safe in baltics till May this year - then they all joined and up wnet the b....y blue flags with its Stars ..... wonder that Blair didn't get it changed to a version of the Stars and Stripes !!!!

I now fly with pride at my house ..... the Union Jack and also the St Georges Cross ........ both 2 yds versions. Couldn't find bigger at the time ...... !!!!!

Stars and stripes? I think they make it in the US. They normally get burnt if you visit arab countries, so you might want to keep your Union Jack as a backup flag.

Could always apply for an EU grant. They seem to give them for most things........
