the picture doesn't show correctly Vas,
here is a pic made in daylight

FullSizeRender7.jpg

the light brown parts, is the temporarely repair, new plywood, several layers filling complete gap between inner and outside shell, and sqeezed left and right between a frame, and the fairlead

you can see the darkbrown solid wooden stringer, just below the corner of the fairlead, I can confirm that this wood is still in impeccable condition,
the dark coller is from moisture under the gaffa tape

on the upper part of the hole, you can see the border of the orriginal plywood shell,
this looks a bit dark but also this is still in perfect condition, no rot at all !

fine,

Bart, don't waste your time thinking too hard on that, just reinforce, repair with ply, fair, get a couple of light mat with epoxy and finish it off, like the Canados guys did a couple of years ago.
Just find a solution for the vent gaps we're talking about. Worried that if the stringer is not running the whole length and width, you may get pockets where rain water can gather (and rot everything) Not sure that such a constructional method used by Canados will fair well with open vent holes...

cheers

V.

OK, I'm testing my new photo hosting site,
a friend has copy’ed all pictures from Photo bucket to Smugmug,
and replaced all the picture links on some of my old threads,
this old rebuild thread is one of them.
I'd like to continue this blog of the rebuilding of my boat, for future use as testimony of everything we did on her,
and because some people on here like rebuild threads and give comments,
I’m very pleased with so much useful advice.

Its now more than two years ago since my last post in this thread, but we didn’t stop working on her.
now today this is my first post with links from the new foto hosting site
this is the last subject I posted about 2y ago.
the temporary repair we did on damage of the rear corners of the wooden bulwarks.

we reinforced the bulwarks / fairlead position with new marine ply
put some epoxy filler on it,
a few sheets of glass fibre covered with epoxy,
than again epoxy filler,
sanding and spray painting.

That was in marina Zelenika winter 2015

Here is another minor job we did a few years ago,
New curtains on the side windows, and rear door in the saloon,
a light silver grey fabric
swmbo has a habit of closing them every night

And a new carpet, for replacing the old cream colour … yukes!
Apart from the natural (grey again) colours, the carpet has a very nice feel on bare feet.

Some might comment that a lot of grey looks dull and boaring,
But we leave it to the guests to bring color to the party ;-)
(their stuff, clothes, towels, …and some of them’s presence is colorful :D )

awesome Bart. You definitely need to fill us in on the last 2 years work.

I’m not sure I can make it through the long winter without a rebuild thread from you! :)

Most of our focus the last 2 Years was on the rebuilding of our MAN engines.

This is a long thread about a big failure we had on one engine in 2014,
And the consequent rebuilding of both engines,

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...end-last-trip-of-our-summer-holliday’s/page34

after the 2016 summer season we had one remaining issue,
that max RPM on both engines was not equal.

As discussed in this thread:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?468525-how-to-do-a-quot-soft-quot-cleaning-of-the-bottom

it turned out that fouling had nothing todo with the RPM difference, but,
by swapping the injection pumps (a one day job !) we discovered the issue was in ONE injection pump,
the one that had been refurbished first, in Serbia gave lower RPM

spring 2017, both pumps were send to another Bosh service center (3th time now),
But this time it was Bosh Zagreb, and with these guy’s there was much more communication about our issues,
So that after that the pumps were installed (end of may 2017) max RPM on both engines was the same (2300 rpm)

Summer 2017, long trip from Montenegro along Sicily to Italy Amalfi coast,
We didn’t punish her too hard, (we ran 95% at 1300Rpm, 11kn), still running-in the engines and injectionpumps, and avoiding big problems.
Apart from a few small leaks, cooling water hose, and fuel on injectors, that we could all cure,
the engines are running smooth !

There is one remaining issue that I would like to tackle one day:
after many hours cruising, there is slightly more soot on the edge of the swim platform on one side compared to the other,
The exhausts are on the transom corners, just above water level, right below the corners of the swim platform.
Would like to know the cause.
I need MAN service onboard anyway this winter for re-tightening the cylinder heads

That’s the story of our engine rebuilding
by doing this in steps, this has lasted 3 years so far.
I know a lot about mechanical MAN engines now :ambivalence:

This is our 230V mains electric display panel;
(installed in spring 2016)

Info on the features, and the different display’s is explained here in this thread

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...Canados-70s)&p=5644376&highlight=#post5644376

the Yellow device is a Bender earth leak meter,
this device measures with a measurement coil
if and how much leak current we have in the 230V supply lines
this device can give a alarm, it can not switch off the mains power

installed in the same period,
level sensors and display for Fuel, Blackwater and freshwater tank,
display can be set to give %, liters or gallons,…
strange tank shape can be programmed, …

Sensors for fresh Water and fuel, are “pressure” sensors, installed in the outlet hose, with a T-coupling, near the bottom of each tank.
Can’t find pics from the sensor placement right now.

The sensor for the black tank, is a ultrasonic type,
Alle sensors supplied by Philippi.

Another item that we have installed are bladder tanks for additional fuel capacity in the bilges,
So far we have 4 extra tanks of 460l, (still some space and connections available for more)
We can’t use the total capacity of these tanks, due to space restrictions the tanks don’t fill completely,
Approx. 1500l extra is now possible (on top of the original 5500l )

Here is a thread on this project from initial idea untill installation

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...er-tanks-in-the-biges-for-extra-fuel-capacity

we have used this feature so far 2 times,
first in 2016, when we left Porto Montenegro with detax fuel, for a long trip to Venice and back
then in 2017 when we left PM, for a long trip via Sicily to Naples.

B, I believe that most boatbuilders should learn from that - also in their more recent installations.
Clean, understandable and complete - just perfect. :encouragement:

well not yet complete, we alway's find new small things that we want to change / improve ...;-)

last week I had a interesting conversation with Victron at Mets,
due to that I decided NOT to continue the project with solar panels, (not worth the hassle in my situation)
and NOT to change to Li Ion battery's
(their new HE model, 200Ah @ 24V and 28kg was very tempting)

But I might upgrade my 2 x Victron quattro's 5KW to the new 8Kw's and add the colour display.
(2 x used Quattro 5Kw might become available after winter !)

I couldn't agree more MM, impressive arrangement.

thanks C,
AFAIK BA is the only boat that can run stabs from batt's
up to 3 hrs at anker (depending sea state and total of other loads switched "on" at that moment)
and during navigation the engine alternators are charging,

The moisture problem in the wooden gunwale as discussed in this thread in 2014:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?385632-Moisture-issue-on-the-wooden-gunwale-of-Blue-Angel

was at that time, temporary cured with a number of ventilation openings like these:

But, now the wood could dry very well, so that some parts of it became almost completely pulverized. (behind the paint)
In some area’s, you could press holes through the paint with your finger.
So a total rebuild of this gunwale was planned for this winter, and we found a yard to do that In Santa Maria di Castellabate (130km south of Naples)

Here is the first badge of pics from these works:
