Hello there ,

Think that i have just blown up my regulator , had switched on engine and noticed that my charging light was on (shound not be ) therefore something was amiss .

I had left the ignition key in the off position for about 15 minutes , however i was told that this would not cause any problems, therefore i have now checked all wiring which was sound except the live battery terminal was slack on the engine starting battery (two battery system thing master swicht was on engine battery).

Have now stripped out alternator and have checked diodes (dual charging) which appear to be OK .

How does one check the regulator ?? (it is bolted onto back of alternator)
Ps Engine is a Volvo MD7B

Many Thanks

Andrew

I would dismount alternator and take it along to your nearest Lucas agent (e.g. Furneaux Riddell in Portsmouth. They will be able to test and replace as necesary.

Regulators are known to blow when running with the ignition switched off!

Have I this right, the warning light was on with ign switch on, was the engine running ?
Normally the ign switch will not effect the alternator on a7b, as it senses via the alternator output cable, which goes via the isolator switch, which will damage the alternator.

For testing the regulator have a look at the yanmar alternator manuals <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wightsailing.co.uk/page02.html>here</A>

You are going to need a 100 Ω 2W resistor
a 0 - 300 Ω variable resistor 12W
2 x 12v batteries
a voltmeter

Hope this helps
