Bloomin' jetskis!

Jetskiers, irritating, yes very often, but they invariably wear buoyancy aids ( or lifejackets) as they value self preservation; which to judge by another thread topic is entirely optional or undesirable for some mobo and saily boat crew members.

On Jetskis I'm not sure if the buoyancy aids are to help float or to absorb impact when you come off.. :)

I haven't been on a jetski in many years and took my brothers out for a spin a couple of weeks ago.. He has a supercharged Seadoo that apparently makes 190hp.. The acceleration is immense and 60+ mph comes up so quickly.. Falling off at anywhere near that speed would definitely hurt!

What did amaze me is how much wash they produce at low speed.. We were doing about 5kn and my brother and his wife came past on the jetski doing about 8kn and you would have though a huge cruiser just went past..

not all people with jetskis are morons just the same as with anything else motorbikes etc, hurricance off here has one so does that make him and idiot ??? I think people just see jetskis and think the worse all the time

I totally agree with Lanerboy.

We all dislike boaters that speed through speed limit areas and through anchorages as shown in lots of recent threads, so I would never defend any idiot on a PWC that did that. When we are out and about I generally see really good manners from people on PWC's. Yes there is always one that goes down the Hamble a little too fast, but that could be said for some ribs, mobo's and yacht's.

When I'm at sea and they come and jump my wake what does it matter as long as they aren't putting my boat or others in danger?

Again there is no defence for the idiots that race round anchored boats and the like, but last week when we was at Osborne Bay swimming, no PWC's caused an issue, it was rib's and mobo's that came through at speed. Yes you look and think 'prats' but again as long as they keep their distance and don't put anyone in danger that's just life.

In the op's link, a PWC broke down. It could happen to anyone of us. Yes it's a waste of time and money if the issue was easily preventable but, if like I hope I will only ever need the emergency services when something drastic and un foreseeable happens, then I don't see a problem.

In another life, many years ago I used to race ski's. Even ended up at the world finals in Havasu with a British team. Never once did I go out of my way to annoy others and all race training took place in private lakes far, far away from the public. I'd like to think I was ultra careful in how I handled and rode my ski's, just like I think I do now with my boat.

We all enjoy the sea no matter how we choose to go about it......... Blimey this is beginning to sound like stinky's and raggies all over again :)

Brought ours to Mallorca on this trip
I thought it might have been the wrong thing to do and maybe it should have been left on its dock at Sant Carles
But, actually, it has been great fun - loads of motorboats out here seem to be carrying them this year

Been using in the Trenc - early in the morning before any swell builds up.
All my yachtie friends have been enjoying it
Several rules - drive slowly out of the anchorage - buoyancy aids always used, if only for somewhere to attach the kill cord

Mine was previously owned by another forumite from this forum
It is a 215HP supercharged Seado - and, yes it is capable of doing 70 MPH
I've done 68 MPH on it
It is a very powerful toy and has to be respected

We bought a Yamaha jetski earlier this year, great fun but agree with others that they have to be respected a lot can go wrong at the speeds they are capable of.

Some folks may not be aware but Yamaha are huge supporters or the RNLI, all new purchasers are automatically enrolled as members. They also sponsor training thru approved RYA instructors on each new sale.

I have not encountered any animosity whatsoever, in fact the opposite, entering our marina last Friday evening at around 3 knots I struck up a conversation with 4 blokes on a yacht, 5 minutes later I was invited aboard for drinks, very nice.. Is this a record?
