Bleeding screw!!

Those part numbers do not appear to be those for the bleed screw, and its gasket, on the fuel filter.
I think they maybe for a banjo bolt and gaskets {copper washers} else where on the system
.
Apologies. I missed a part number off from my invoice. 957170 and 243487 are for the fuel leak off (I had to replace both). 957178 is the gasket for the bleed screw (of the secondary filter pictured) the bleed screw is 944679. That said think I would go with Vic008 and use dowty washers if there's a next time. Diagram here: Volvo Penta parts and accessories - MarinePartsEurope.com

If the same filter head as on my tmd41a's the thread is m6 x 1.0 , just get a helicoil kit and do it in situ but take the filter off so you can clear the swarf, any m6 bolt and copper washer will get you running again.
I fitted self sealing brake bleed nipples to make fuel bleeding a mess free doddle, attach a oil extractor pump open the nipple and close when you see clean fuel, no mucking about with the priming lever and no mess.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

When I google that I seem to get aluminium washers, hence my confusion!

just get a helicoil kit and do it in situ

I like this suggestion - maybe I could arm myself with a new screw and gasket and give that a try (although given that until yesterday I thought a helicoil was some sort of flying machine I'm not sure how that would go!)

If I was going to swap for a Dowty washer how critical is the sizing? Or is there an easy way to tell that a particular one is definitely compatible?

With a dowty washer you may have issues with a helicoil as the rubber seal may not cover the bigger hole fully.
Helicoils are a doddle and the kits come with the right size drill/tap/insert tool, if the thread if fully stripped often you can get away without the drill and use the insert tap direct if the old thread comes out on the screw, the old screw should be reusable if it's the thread in the head that's gone.
The key is to keep the drill straight or you'll never get a seal if the bolt goes back in on the lash.

Those are still not the part numbers for the bleed screw the OP pictured originally.
See the link I posted in # 20 and you will kind the correct numbers or see below

Excellent, thanks Vic.

Arc1, thanks for looking for those part numbers. I suppose I would be better to change the gaskets on the pipe connections too (if it does have to come off). Those seem to be aluminium ones rather than copper - does that seem right?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks to everyone for taking the time to help!

Job now done, thanks to everyone for your helpful advice. The problem was indeed the threads in the the filter housing, which had been stripped (and mostly came out with the screw). It was a quick and easy fix once I got my hands on a helicoil kit and I was able to do it in situ.

Thanks again!

I had a similar problem on, I think, an MD1 filter housing. It was originally some imperial thread into which the previous owner had forced a metric, or perhaps an incompatible imperial, bolt. I drilled it out and tapped it metric and with a new annealed copper washer it was fine.
