Hi All,

I'm looking for suggetions on the best way to attach my anchor rode to the anchor. I have a 25lb CQR, 6 metres of chain and 25m of warp. I'm hauling by hand and last year during my first season I often struggled to retrieve the anchor due to interference between the shackle used to attach the chain to the ring on the end of the anchor and the width of bow roller. Over the winter I have discarded all shackles and spliced the warp to the chain. Now I am looking for the best method of attaching the chain to the anchor without using something greater than the size of chain link. The warp is 10mm dia and the chain link size is approx 8mm thickness.

Many thanks

My anchor chain has a large end link which then enables a larger than chain sized shackle to be used to connect to the anchor.
You need a larger shackle 'cos the shackle is not as strong as the chain ... or so I believe.

I looked at Kong (fixed) anchor connector ... in fact I bought one ... but the jaws wont fit the anchor shank.

smallest one HERE

galvanised, non swivel. Max diam 27.5mm £20 if you are in my area

The usual problem is the width of the shaft on the CQR governs the minimum size of the shackle. Sometimes you need two shackles just to down-size to connect to the chain.

The thumb lugs on the end of the pin are probably the cause of the hang-up. If you cut them off and peen over both ends ..... effectively riveting the pin into the shackle, it would avoid this problem.

Do you have a chain lock? ..... they are very useful if you are pulling the rode up by hand. But do be careful of snatch loads if the anchor gets caught.

We had the same problem so I fitted a 'tabless' shackle (as sawing the tab off makes the shackle go rusty). They generally have an Allen or slotted heads to do them up. Not having a tab with a hole, you will not be able to mouse it so we use a small amount of epoxy. Never shifted yet, in fact when we wanted to change one, I had to saw it off the anchor. You do not often see tabless shackles in chandlers, so you may have to hunt around/ask.

I assume you don't want/need to use a connector swivel.
In your circumstances I would use a Wichard 17/4 PH shackle with a countersunk Allen screw. Like this, although you may be able to fit a 'D' shape instead of the bow shown here.

This was the strongest type tested and will allow you to use a lighter section while keeping adequate strength. Loctite thread sealant will prevent it from coming undone, although it needs to be checked from time to time. This shackle and thread sealant is what I use myself, anchoring about half of every year.

More information about connector and shackle testing on my website.

One other point. 10 mm warp is very light for an anchor rode, regardless of boat size. If you need to haul it in a good blow your hands will suffer. 12 mm is the least I would use, unless you have a very small boat indeed.
