The bolt-on lead keel on my 2002 Najad is looking tatty. Whatever it is coated in (probably the same exopy barrier that is on the rest of the hull) is starting to flake off and there's some car body filler to match the step between the GRP hull and the keel. I want to strip it down to bare metal and start again.
What is the best treatment to reapply? ... primers, fillers and finish. I am particularly interested in how to get stuff to stick to the lead.

I painted mine with bog standard epoxy primer from Tecno Marine in Turkey and its still good after 10 years - but needs abrading for copper coat to stick

As above I just used 2 pack epoxy filler and standard epoxy primer and made sure the surface was well prepared. You might need to experiment with tools as things tend to get clogged easily. That was 12 years ago. Still looks like its just been done. I was a bit surprised but nothing seems to happen unless you hit a rock. Even then quite a big impact just leaves a small dent.

I think mine was primed in International Gelshield primer as that's what the rest of hull was done in. Although epoxy maybe there's something about it means it doesn't stuck to lead. I'll try plain ol' 2 pack and primer. Thanks

I'd ask one of the surface coating manufacturers, International come to mind. They all have technical departments - they are there for a variety of reasons - one is to help owners with their problems.

I would ask my handler for the help line number if my paint supplier and ask them.

Regarding asking a paint manufacturer..... I find I usually get a better answer from the good people on this forum.

A manufacturer will only recommend their products. International said 3 coats of Interprotect and fill with WaterTight. I get the impression I can read the sales literature just as well as the man from International.

Here in Sant Carles there's a down to earth fisherman's co-op. I asked there today and got some good answers from the staff and the folks (presumably local fishermen with real experience) standing around. The answer was a mixture of different manufacturers, about half the price of International and a few options depending on the condition of the keel.
