The saucepan and lead line trick belongs with the Aspirin tablet trick, as one of those Fifties and Sixties bits of over ingenuity in cruising.
The Aspirin tablet (or any other cheap over the counter medication in tablet form) is to leave the fore hatch open with an aspirin tablet on the end of the strut; if it rains the tablet will dissolve and the hatch will shut.
You will have spotted the problem which is that by the time the tablet loses its cohesion the stuff under the hatch will be already soaked.
