I need to transfer about £25K from my UK bank account to my French account (€).

My bank seems to want to charge a hefty exchange/admin fee (about 4%).
1K seems a lot to just push some buttons.

There must be cheaper ways of doing this...

Suggestions welcome.

I use TransferWise to America and Xendpay to China. Both pretty good (cheap). TransferWise takes a couple of days, Xendpay about 4 days.

Currencies Direct has always been excellent. We also had a reasonable amount back in Amazon vouchers as an introductory offer. Originally learnd about them from Martin's Money Expert site which has a section on the best currency firms to use.

We live in the Limousin (well strictly speaking now called 'Nouvelle-Aquitaine) and have always found transferwise very competitive for rates and also friendly and efficient. Have used them very happily for years.

This is exactly how Transferwise works - except they arrange all of it for you and ensure nobody gets screwed. Have used them and can recommend.

Edit: Beware, any transfer over €10k is subject to money laundering safeguards and usually involves additional hassle and delays (no matter which method you use).

Maybe this just displays my naivety in such matters, but it's a transfer from one account in my name to another account in my name.

I registered simply because I read your question and was disturbed by the answers you received. I regularly transfer funds to Europe and USA via Barclays Bank online, ranging in size from way below your £25,000 to way above same and I have never been charged more than £19.00 (includes recipient bank charges). Exchange rates may not be the best but no significant difference. It is no longer a complicated transaction by any stretch of the imagination. Hope this helps you!
