if i brought my boat 57' x 15' x 5' to the Uk, solent type area incl poole, for a mast extension jobbie, would i be able to find a berth for her, preferably floating mooring not too far from facilities or at a push marina/yard, where I could also do the work, basically what are the chances? Thanks.

Depends really.
If you were to do it now(ish) no probs, as lots of boats are on the hard, but leave it till Apr and every man and his dog will be back in the water and mooring will be at a premium. In high season, if you're not too fussy you will find somewhere. There is usually room on the Itchen, and upper reaches of the Hamble (Deacons) most of the year for temporary moorings.

Getting expensive, I know the african queen very well, knew her owner before he pegged it. Maybe enndup back there, but a bit wet and only one place for rigging and sails. Plus hard to find other stuff, I will need.

Well on a more serious note you could be accomodated at Plymouth yacht haven, hlb's base, the old Mountbatten sheds currently have a 63' friends boat in them that we took round a few months ago. They seem well kitted out to do everything that's needed. Plus loads of other marine suppliers around so additional kit no problem.

maybe think about plymouth, seems a good bet and probably cheaper than anywhere in the solent. i was thinking about the multitude of suppliers around there and good boat jumbles etc. this would be my last trip with the boat to the uk, after that it's pastures new.

I know it's my home port Colin. But I have to agree. Plymouth has to be one of your best options. Especialy for a boat the size of Englander. For cheapness I suspect a buoy up the Cattewater and dinghy or water taxi to pub. would be best. In between visits to boat yards or Yacht Haven as and when. You got fed up of the sun then??

not fed up, no, but would like to come back, to extend my mast and get a new sail made, plus extending the rigging etc. I will need yard facilities to scarf 10' into my mast, but I would do the work. or rather want to. May end up doing it in spain or gib or portugal, just brainstorming right now.

Come North dear boy...we have berths here at Troon that could accomadate at prices half the cost of the South coast...also travel hoist that could see you safetly ashore...and oh yes were a friendly bunch up here!!!

i would want to scarf my mast and epoxy a new section in, in fact four new sections, will it stay dry long eough to allow the epoxy to set? and long enough to varnish it? Would love to come north, but i really dont think so.

I know it's chilly in Scotland, but putting scarf on your mast is probably going a bit far. A bobble hat on top maybe?

could try gosport (c&N) .... free electricity for the humungous fridge plant, distillery and whatever else is onboard her .. even electric blanket for scarfes etc

perhaps best not to tell 'em kwh consumption bigger than brum ...

however, the big berths at Gosport are at right angles to the river and suffer much less from wash etc .. so decent sleep etc etc ... particularly if a norther end (new=ish part) ...
