in my quest for the perfect boat i am considering the benny first 285.
any opinions on its suitability as a good round the cans race boat and as a family cruiser.
paticularly interested in the lift keeler

I have had a 285 for about 5 years .Firsy class round the cans. For a comfortable ride reef at 17-18 knts.Well finished off inside,a lot of wood. Can not comment on the 285 lift keel, but generaly lift keels do not sail any like finn keels.Lift keel a pain to maintain your self.

Generally the First range are very good value for money; I have a 38s5, a friend has a 325; good fast comfortable boats; not sure about the lift keel - never had one but would generally go for a deep fin.

I agree with the above, we have a First 32s5 never raced it officialy but it will beat the Sunsail 37's every time and we have cruised for two weeks in comfort across the Channel.
I have not sailed a lift keel but I would consider one, not sure of the maintenance though.

We bought a First 285 this spring - wing keel as opposed to lift. She sails well, points well, needs reefing early as Morse says. Comfortable inside - we have been away for up to 5 nights with two adults and two children and have all survived. The water capacity is a bit on the small size for prolonged cruising but if you are just coast hopping its fine. I havent raced much yet but the boat did well in our Clubs recent long distance race until we went downwind and lost out to the spinnakers. Have a look here for a 285 that crossed the atlantic www.first285.com
