Yup I'm a dick, read the position of the cursor (at the Needles) rather than the vessel (shiipping lanes) when reporting a floting container to Solent CG .. aherm .. apologies & much self flagellation

Re: And the rest?

You are all a bit coy, what's the rest of the Cherbourg gos or has the News Of The World bought your stories?

That explains it then Jimi

Glen Rosa didn't suddenly find warp drive and when you called in you were 10mls behind not 10 miles in front! When I heard your report I thought you were calling about the floating container we had passed which was somewhat smaller and looked like a deepfreeze. Maybe Joe was clearing out his garage.

You realise you were the source for another of those DSC alerts going off? That made five I think in our crossing and we did turn the set off too for a couple of hours (Joburg Traffic DSC alarms every 20 minutes).

Hope the head is better.

We left the marina at 0645 motored a while because the wind was light and on only just off our course for Poole, once it came round to 30 apparent we sailed and pretty soon were making 6.5/7kts, later 8.5/9kts. The position Solent gave for the container you passed in their DSC alert put you behind us to starboard and we had cleared the last of the lanes over an hour earlier when I think you said you had just left the last one, we were off Poole entrance at 16.00, what time did you get to the Needles?

We slipped Cherbourg at 7:30 and were in the Needles Chennel for 17:30 .. superb sailing at 7+ knots. I initially headed westish so we could get freer and faster when the wind went westerly .. which it did fortunately!

We had up to 24kts in the end but at best 60 degs app so some boatspeed wind and tide wind too, should have reefed about 8mls off if not before but didn't seem worth it so we just rolled the genoa to the 1st mark.

One of our YC boats (46' racer) left the marina at 0530 and 4 hours trying to sail from the east entrance later was just 10mls closer to Poole and 28mls off track east! We left the marina 1.25hrs after them and were in over an hour before they turned up at the Club. I think too that if we had waited another hour before leaving we might have done better with the early wind and avoided the light headwind start.

I too have lost all credibility having tried to convince our crew as we were close to you at the time that we had taken the given position down wrongly.......

Did Solent Coastguard broadcast the Needles "position" or the one near the TSS?

It certainly caused us some entertainment on an enjoyable but thankfully uneventful crossing!

;-)

Yes, but you should have seen the bickering between two grown men, each having written down a position from you and looking at the chart on the ops room wall.......... 'how far apart??'

It lightened up the afternoon for the rest of us anyway. A classic, thanks. :)

Well we did leebow all the friggin way apart from after entering the Solent and it worked a treat, I kept it quiet from the crew as they do'nt understand these sorts of things. There were initial querying looks when upon leaving the Solent we were on a course for La Coruna but they soon settled down and upon the return they expressed a desire to avoid Salcombe if at all possible. I gave up trying to explain these vectorial principles to the mathematically illieterate Parahandy and concentrated on distracting him with bits of kitkat.

Slow trip

We plan on 9 hours and usually beat it, probably 8.5hrs is a reasonable time if I don't cock up the tides! Our best so far all sailed is 8hrs but we think we can do 7.5 if everything comes together right, we thought it was on 3 weeks ago but the wind vanished 8mls off Poole. We have an effective waterline length of 36ft though.

We have Neptune Passage Planner software which is fairly basic but can calculate CTS and optimum departure times for selected average speeds etc. Interestingly, since Poole to Cherbourg is pretty much at 90degs to the tideflows, you would expect no time difference for different deparure times - actually there is about 1hr difference between best and worst for a planned speed of 6/6.6kts! you can often see this by the distance sailed, get it wrong and the 60mls entrance to entrance can be up to 68mls (done that!).

Sorry, wo'nt do it again.

I am putting a warning sticker on my chartplotter that on one screen the cursor position rather than the vessel position is displayed, this will be part of my crew briefing as well.

On another point what happens with these containers? DO they just float back and forwards until they sink or will they sunk by the CG? We went into a cold sweat considering the consequences of crashing into it at night.

Apparently there are thousands floating around the globe. They can take years to sink because they are often full of electronics with polystyrene packaging. The insurance industry seems to accept it.
Less frightened now?

I didn't go into a cold sweat because I'd visualised a certain McDuff 26 owner smashing into it at night at 50 knots.
